Four years running now!

Historically our most listened to podcast of the year because no one breaks things down and gives out info like DePaul coach Doug Bruno!

Bruno’s DePaul team played UConn during the regular season, and Oregon State in the regional semifinals. Having played both teams, it is interesting to get his perspective on where Oregon State can give UConn trouble, and how the Huskies should play the Beavers.

A former Big East member with Syracuse, Bruno coached against Hillsman the Syracuse zone for years, and is familiar with the Neighbors’ Washington zone and which team is better equipped to deal with the other.

Along with these items, coach Bruno also discusses:

Breanna Stewart from the coach perspective, having coached her in USA Basketball
Rapid success in building and recruiting by Rueck at Oregon State and how they defeated DePaul
Pac-12 success, the oft-discussed idea of gaming the RPI, and the inherent flaw with the whole RPI concept
Plum, Walton, and Osahor, and the success of the “Other Huskies”
Syracuse’s zone, but especially players like Lexie Peterson and Brianna Butler, and how they succeed

In the final segment, coach Bruno weighs in on the UConn success debate, and the killing the sport theme in a must listen to part of the podcast.

Coach Bruno breaks down OSU accurately. Specifically, how DePaul exposed Ruth Hamblin defensively at the perimeter. I'm sure Geno already has this dialed in.

It was my obviously mistaken impression that the Syracuse women are relatively recent converts to the Boeheim zone.

This was really good. Just when I thought everything that could be said had been said, Coach Bruno provides some unique insights into the women's game as a college coach, a national team coach, and Geno's friend. The word to describe Doug Bruno is GENTLEMAN; he is a true quality person. As Coach Bruno spoke about each team, generously in every regard, I thought how difficult it is to talk about teams in the abstract. UConn hasn't played any of the other three teams in the FF, so how this will all look on the court no one really knows. But there is a pervasive feeling I have that once the teams come together, the Huskies just play at another level. They are just better than everyone else this year. And in the end no one can beat them.

I really enjoyed this interview. Thanks for posting this link. Doug Bruno is such a great ambassador for the sport.

Part of me wishes that Jewell Loyd, a local product from the Chicago area, had chosen DePaul over Notre Dame. I believe her personality and her game would have flourished there even more than at South Bend.

Thanks for listening! I could talk basketball with Doug for hours. What's great about interviewing him is you always have to be ready and on your toes, because you can ask a question and he will go in three different directions with the answers he gives.

Right away I was going to talk to him about his three stars, and how OSU shut down Podkowa and Jenkins. He brought it up and answered before I even could ask!

Doug is a great ambassador for the sport and, obviously, a really knowledgeable guy. I'll sleep better over the next 3 nights having listened to him break things down.

Doug Bruno showing a lot of respect for OSU (as he should). I hope it's not too much of a grind it out type of game. Those typically come w/a lot of fouls..
