A Message From UConn President Susan Herbst

A letter to Husky fans and supporters on conference realignment

Dear UConn Friends and Colleagues:
It is difficult to write to you about athletics or any other conventional university items in light of the Newtown tragedy. We will never understand it; hopefully there will be some healing in the future, although that seems very far off right now. I ask that you consider giving one of the greatest gifts of all to the survivors of Sandy Hook Elementary: the opportunity to attend a top research university like ours. Please make a gift to a young child, so that he or she might have the honor of being a Husky some day.

As you know, conference realignment continues at a rapid pace and UConn has new challenges we must face.[This caught us by surprise and we continue to react] I do not know when or how things will settle; no one does. [This caught us by surprise and we have no plan or vision.] There is more change to come that will reshape the landscape yet again. [We have no idea what is happening because we are on the outside of ongoing discussions in other conferences]. I assure you that the BIG EAST presidents are both unified and optimistic, working to strengthen the conference in imaginative ways that will see us through to a bright future for our students, coaches, and fans. [We will continue to hang in with the pack as security from predators because it easy to rely on others and we have no strategy. “Imaginative ways” translation…we are coming up with gimmicks]. Commissioner Mike Aresco is an outstanding leader at an extraordinarily complex time, and our university partners represent powerful, high-quality institutions that we are proud to join with in this conference. [Translation – UConn’s destiny lies in the hands of Aresco because we don’t know what to do and he seems to have some idea].
I realize that this is aggravating to hear, but as in all things, we can only affect what is in our control. [Translation – Nothing is in our control]. As a result, we strive for excellence at UConn daily across all departments, something very much in our control. We stand tall at UConn and we need not beg, plead, nor despair. [Translation - We will focus on academics. Let’s not focus on sports, because we have no plan and we really are a research university.] That is not who we are, and my reading of our university history -- from 1881 to today -- conveys the pride of every generation, in good times and bad. [Things are bad, and besides for about 100 years UConn was a Podunk Ag University, so what’s the difference in the perspective of time. Hey, have you tried the Dairy Barn?]
There are profound concerns about the future of collegiate athletics of course. I speak often to presidents across the nation, and we are hardly alone in our worries. Even many seemingly "secure" universities are fearful of the changes to come, not only in the realm of realignment, and hope for a long-term stability that seems elusive right now. [Translation – We blew it, but others are worried they might blow it so take solace that others might end up like us too, so it’s not our fault.]

We here at UConn have incredibly powerful and compelling teams, decades of accomplishment, joyful traditions at games, and great plans in the works, such as our men's ice hockey team entering Hockey East in 2014, the top conference in the nation, and our new building projects, like the UConn Basketball Development Center. [Wait, I need to say we are relevant in sports, so Ill add that in. The Basketball Development Center proves we are moving forward and throw hockey in too. Maybe I position us like Northeastern University…good hockey with an ex-football program.]

I know that it is difficult to read much of the internet content right now about athletics, which seems to be dominated by negativity. Many bloggers, journalists, and even fans from elsewhere would like to see UConn hurt, and hence write with a cynical tone [The pressure is getting to me and I acknowledge people want my head. But let’s make them enemies of UConn, even if they are actual UConn fans.]. This flip discourse is again, not in our control. [Call it “flip” to be dismissive and not thoughtful. You have no idea how hard it is for me and my team. ]The truth is that this is a top national research university with a terrific athletics program that will flourish, no matter what conference we are in and no matter what the media chatter looks like. [Translation – Ill choose to be hopeful and hope things work out].

I wish you could see my mail and answer my phone, to get a true sense of how dedicated and upbeat our best fans are. [Translation - I have a circle of supporters too. They understand how hard this job this is for me, and they want to see me be successful beacause I'm a woman. They get it and the others don’t.] Far from being depressed or dragged down by negativity, they are more committed than ever before, and know that it is their very commitment that will determine our future [I have no role in this. It’s really everybody else that has to be successful, because I have no plan other than wishful thinking.]They know that we will be more than fine, even if there are months and maybe even years of conference uncertainty ahead. [Translation – we have no current plan or direction, so Ill start slipping in the concept of years.] We still get to play and we still get to win. [Translation – filler sentence with no meaning or substance, completely avoiding the issue of quality national competition.] Our true fans and supporters so love our coaches and students, and enjoy their tremendous efforts on the field and court. [Translation- You are not a true fan if you criticize our performance or incompetence.] That is what I appreciate, and what all university presidents hope for. [Translation – we are all circling the wagons and will all keep patting each other on the backs telling ourselves our wonderful an supportive we are of each other. We’ll stick together, because if we don’t we all will be responsible for our tremendous failure on our watch. As long as they support me, I’ll support them.]
When it comes to athletics, I normally write to you - so often these volatile days! - about student-athletes and our need to focus on them. Again, there is much cynicism around this topic. I cannot speak for other institutions, but here at least, focusing on our students guides what we think and what we do. We care deeply about student academic success, and the pride that we feel about all of our sports is both immense and genuine. [Translation – Refocus to education as a red herring. Add flower fluff about pride and deep caring.]

So, Huskies: Let's all hang tough and please keep some perspective, as hard as it is in a time of great change. Win or lose, conference struggles or not, UConn is a research university. So if you are feeling low, just head to our university home page and glory in the amazing new faculty we are hiring at a rapid pace, our incredible student successes across disciplines, scientific awards and invention by our faculty, and all that matters most at your flagship university. [Translation – There is nothing going on positively in UConn sports. Did I tell you we are a research university, and that’s what’s important?]

I was hired because I'm an optimist, and I cannot help being just that. I never see the productive value in cynicism and negativity, when there is so much to be proud of. [Translation: I’m optimistic. Why? Because, I am. Do I have any vision or plan? No, but optimism over comes a plan] It's a tough world out there, but you can count on me to be the Number One Cheerleader for this superb place I call home. I hope to see you at many games this year - basketball, hockey, and spring sports are not too far off, despite the temperatures out there! Support our beloved university, our outstanding coaches and students, and all really will be well.
I realize that it is difficult to have a truly happy holiday if you are at all close to Newtown or are simply touched by it, as so many are, around the world But do please have a safe and restful break, and be thankful that we are so tightly bound to each other by this great university community [. [Translation – I am so PC I can’t say the word Christmas either in reference to the holiday period itself, or in relation to the word break. Whew, I navigated that one nicely. I'm such a PC superstar. Everything will be fine because thats what everybody says should happen. If I close my eyes and dream maybe something good will happen. I love warm and deep caring communities. Not Christian caring of course. The nonsecular, nonoffensive kind of caring. ]

My Letter Revised Letter:

Dear Friends and Supporters:

I would like to thank Coach Paul Pasqualoni and Manuel Warde for their great commitment and efforts to the University of Connecticut during tumultuous times. However, I have decided that current challenges require new leadership to help guide us in a new direction. I wish them great success in their future endeavors, as they are talented individuals. As we transition, please be assured that our university is committed to achieving its vision of becoming a leading public university on and off the field of play.

We will soon be announcing new hires for our football coach and also our athletic director. These positions will be filled by the very best talent available. In terms of athletic conference affiliation, UConn is an exceptional public university and we will join a tier one, power conference that is in keeping with our tradition, character and goal of achieving excellence. Our destiny is solely in our control. I am committed to a vision of excellence that can become a reality with hard work and leadership. I am working diligently with our Governor and Legislature to develop an economic development plan that will help ensure our success in both the near and long term future. Be assured that our vision is clear, and we will emerge from the current setback stronger and better positioned to become recognized as an elite national public university.

We will be unrelenting in our mission to be champions on the field and in the classroom. We are only limited by our own imagination and willingness to do the hard things. The University of Connecticut has risen to prominence in a variety of sports, most notably men’s and women’s basketball. In football, UConn achieved a nearly improbably rise from a regional football program to one of national stature with great successes, including a memorable win over Notre Dame and a visit to a BCS bowl. We owe all those student athletes that gave it their all and believed in UConn’s place in the national spotlight nothing less than our best unrelenting efforts.

There will be a day in the not too distant future when we will be playing in a national power conference and for a BCS Championship. Our future is unlimited. That is our destiny, because we choose to make it so. We have a vision, we have plans and have the best people available to make that happen, and it will.

I wish you a Merry Christmas and happy holidays. God bless all the Newtown victims and their families as they struggle with unfathomable losses. Please remember to say a prayer for those suffering, and please make an extra effort to honor the victims of this terrible tragedy by reaching out to those in need.

Regard

SH

P.S. I fired DJ Dogpound, and we invested $10.00 in a pooper scooper and Jonathan can run onto the field.

It speaks for itself. There is no plan or vision. This isn't about instant gratification or fixes. This has been going on for at least 2 years, if not longer. Gimme a break.

How about not spending the last 18 plus months making sports at Uconn worse, never mind instantaneously fixing. 18 months to get ready for the next call from the ACC is not requiring "instantaneous" results, just planning and action. She was hired on June 1, 2011; if ACC came calling that day do you see Uconn behind sPitt, Fruit and also loserville; is not she lost ground, if yes, what did she do to get Uconn next in line.

She was selected back in Dec 2010 so she had 6 months before taking over to get the lay of the land and determine what was important re Uconn and sports. Results so far are Hathaway gone, Rock Star hired, goofy contract to boys basketball coach, no new contract for girls historically good coach. 18 months is enough to get Uconn in place for realignment, if you are good.

Keeping PP is a historically bad decision without some concrete requirements on his assistants, PP balks and issue resolved, get new HC. Suzy and Rock Star had plenty of time to dwell on that one, what Uconn gets is PP makes the call on coaches and Don Brown then gets to make his own personal call on where he wants to coach.

You are looking at the above ground stuff. She looked at a foundation and was focused on that. Making UConn a better university and a better research institution.

You folks need to start reading the tea leaves. Three times in the course of her missive she used the very phrase that screams AAU.... a critical pre-requisite for one of the B1G conferences..

.....the truth is that this is a top national RESEARCH university
.....the opportunity to attend a top RESEARCH university like ours
.....this is a top national RESEARCH university

Doesn't that seem like an interesting descriptor to be highlighting?

Perhaps she celebrates Hanukkah?
Maybe she's wiccan? Maybe she's an atheist. Doesn't matter to me. Most of us celebrate Christmas and she ought respect that. I'm sure she'll take the day off.

She is not that coordinated. She is lost. It's bad timing. They made the worst possible hires at the worst possible time between Herbst, Mauel and PP.

Yes, that struck me.

We're not a Big Ten candidate right now, but Herbst seems a) to actually want the place to be a top notch research facility, and b) perhaps leverage that to broaden our options.

Re: BlueDog's OP [translation: offensive post]. Overall the translations in the OP are merely sarcastic and negative. The translation of the last paragraph is more offensive. As the daughter of a Holocaust survivor I suspect Susan Herbst was more likely brought up in the (at least equally) caring traditions of the Jewish faith. Your disgusting attempts at insults based on religion have no place here.

From the very first post of yours that I read on this board which called for Herbst, Manuel and PP to be fired, I questioned your judgment. But on top of that, to find out that you obviously don't respect the existence of non-Christian religions because "Most of us celebrate Christmas" takes it to a more personal level.

So you.

Unfortunately, this board is not exempt from comments people post for news articles at places like yahoo.com or on youtube.com, etc, etc. I've seen the worst stuff imaginable here.

To be fair. I'd rather she sent your letter. But at the end of the day, words are words. They can make us feel better or worse in the meantime, but I'm not sure they would change where we stand.

I'm a firm believer that the only thing we could have done RIGHT THIS MINUTE to change conferences is promise to give up most of the economic upside for X number of years. Other than that, we really don't have anything to negotiate with.

So true. Words are words. They only matters if they reflect real intent and the ability to act on them.

And yet you and a few others freak the duck* out whenever Herbst or Manuel makes a public comment because they didn't say the words you wanted to hear.

Husky68, you aren't gonna win this point. I know . . . I know. . . I too thought this was a venue to discuss UConn athletics. But we both stumbled on so much more - research and the comprehensive university. Plus while we'd both like to fix things instanteously, we also know that it's been a rapidly accelerating decline since June of 2011. Alas, not all share our sense of urgency and there are some who would have UConn become Yale - only without the Ivy League academic prestige. Oh well, maybe we can grow into our potential in another 25 to 30 years. Of course the big time programs that we need to be more like will also still be 25 to 30 years further in their evolution, so perhaps we'll still be existing in a pile of crap like we find ourselves in currently.

What a load of crap. Did you listen to the interview on NPR? She came out and said, very clearly, that they were not all suprised by the departure of the C7 and had been preparing for it. She mentioned that it was a much bigger surprise to fans and alumni, but for her and WM it was expected. I realize it is difficult to imagine, but it is entirely likely that both of them are perfectly competent at their jobs. The fact that they don't: (1) perform their duties in public and report on every detail; or (2) take the actions advised by a random group of fans on the BY; is not evidence of incompetence. In fact, if they did those two things, they should be fired. We are privy to very little, and our judgments reflect our ignorance. As the facts become available, then by all means, let's see what they reveal. I suspect that you will be surprised to find that these two were not asleep at the wheel, even if you don't agree with their every decision.
