When Howard signed Makur Maker, I admit I fell for the hype. HBCU basketball has certainly improved over the last few seasons, but Howard's hopeful season fell flat after just five games played last year.

It's always fun to see who's the cream of the HBCU crop and this year, North Carolina A&T seems like good bet.

This season marks the first year that North Carolina A&T will play in the Big South, a small step up from the MEAC.

Their '21 class is their most touted ever and includes prospects that seem like long-term pieces rather than huge splashes like Maker. Duncan Powell is their prized prospect with 21 D1 offers including four offers from high-major conferences and three from the A10. Transfers include former UConn target David Beatty and former top-100 recruit Marcus Watson.

This week has been a good week for NC A&T as they added '22 prospect Tyrese Elliott, their highest rated recruit ever and former UCF center Collin Smith as a spring semester transfer add.

Their head coach Willie Jones is only entering his second year at the helm and it seems he's been a huge part of the puzzle of building the school's program.

In the Big South, Winthrop is king but it'll be fun to see how NC A&T holds up against them in conference play on February 9th. In non-conference play, the Aggies have a solid slate w/ UNC Greensboro, South Florida, Wake Forest, Stanford, Samford, East Carolina, Central Florida and ETSU.

Anyways, the slow but steady rise of HBCU basketball is a story that's been fun to follow and NC A&T is primed to be one of the top teams from these programs.

Is it basketball season yet?
