UConn Football: Defense Still The Team's Strong Point:

Decent read...

>>" I think we'll be very similar to what we've been," said Hank Hughes, who replaced Brown and is serving his second stint as defensive coordinator in 13 seasons with the program. "You have to be aggressive to some degree. We're not just going to radically change. These kids have been recruited for this and guys have been working in this system. It's not like we're going to have a whole different system because we lost some starters."<<

I'm really optimistic about our defense for next season. Don Brown's defenses were exciting, all the more important since our offense was stagnant, but we often seemed to wear down and overall I don't think they were that much better than Hughes in terms of effectiveness. I think Hughes probably learned a lot from Brown during his time here and I think he'll be able to find a nice compromise between all-out-blitz and bend-don't-break.

I think as long as we can get good play at CB we'll have a top notch defense

Ill say it again. Jhavon Williams impressed the heck out of me at the spring game. If he stays healthy and progresses he can end up as another future pro out of the UConn defensive backfield. I'll be surprised if he isn't a starter by mid season.

I have a pretty high opinion of Hank. When he was DC we had good defenses, a little different approach but very good results. I think he'll do a nice job, maybe similar style but tougher in the red zone and a little more ball hawking.

Yup.

Brown's big issue was in the redzone and with not getting enough turnovers.

Whether or not it was his fault isn't the issue, his D's didn't do a great job with it.
