Hank Gathers. March 4, 1990

Definitely a sad situation. Unfortunately we`d see it again with Reggie Lewis. Both tragedies that really stayed with me as a kid.

The basketball world had a string of memorable players who died in their primes who were all in a similar time period. Len Bias and Hank Gathers. Drazen Petrovic, Reggie Lewis, and Chris Steet all died within months of each other in 1993. Then Bobby Phills and Malik Sealy in 2000.

I remember as a kid being crushed by Drazen's death and then Reggie Lewis died like a month later. Then just a year later I sat there crying when Magic announced he had HIV, everyone thought it was a death sentence at the time.

“The Guru of Go”, great 30 for 30. I used to love watching that team play.
Thanks. I’ll have to check it out. As an aside, I just watched “Of Miracles and Men”. Good story of the miracle on ice from ex-Soviet perspective featuring Fetisov. The 30 for 30s are very good. The Phi Slamma Jamma one was very good as well.

Here’s info on that 1990 matchup between LSU and Loyola Marymount. It was a wild game.

On February 3, 1990,
LSU defeated Loyola Marymount (LMU) 148–141 in an overtime thriller at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, often cited as one of the greatest games in college basketball history. The matchup featured future NBA stars Shaquille O'Neal (20 pts, 24 reb, 12 blocks) and Chris Jackson (34 pts) against LMU's high-scoring duo of Hank Gathers (48 pts, 13 reb) and Bo Kimble (32

I remember the LSU LMU games from that period. Talk about run and gun. Special tribute by Bo Kimble shooting FTs with his opposite hand during the NCAAs after Hank’s death. Very sad time.

Yeah the Miracle on Ice one is on my list. Just haven’t had time to sit down and watch it…because of my kids’ hockey schedules. 😂 My son has played in the 1980 Arena up in Lake Place a few times in tournaments. One time it was -25 degrees with the windchill so walking around town was near impossible, but the second time was great. Cool place to visit.

You’ll enjoy it. Nice perspective. Canadien players from the 70s were goons

Speaking of Lenny Bias, can you imagine what the media coverage would be like today if someone like that died of a cocaine overdose right after being drafted? And kids today have no idea who he is.

On a semi-related note, as a Mets fan, it blows my mind that Dwight Gooden missed the ticker tape parade because he was drugged out in a crackhouse.

Ben Wilson from Chicago was widely considered the best high school player in the country and he was shot and killed in 1984.

I remember the 149’game against Michigan and I think it’s still on YouTube. Michigan was the defending champs and just tried to run with LMU until they just couldn’t. LMU dropped 84 in the second half and out scored Michigan by 27 as they just ran out of gas. Jeff Fryer had like 12 3’s. They were so much fun to watch.

It's also kind of crazy that they held the parade the next morning after they won game 7, not a few days later. Not to excuse his drug riddled absence but you can kind of see how things might have gotten out of hand the night that they won.

Len Bias and Reggie both were shockers.

Bias had the most prototypical SF body you could ask for. Pure scoring at all levels and just exploded off the floor faster and higher than everyone else.

I'm about 99% sure I saw Reggie, JC and Northeastern at HCC and thought how cool it would be if UConn could ever have a coach or player as good as JC or Reggie.
