Even my wife who doesn't follow sports asked how someone recently arrested for domestic violence can receive an award like this.
Because she absolutely deserved it. If she is eligible for the award (and according to the league, she is), then she should win it, as no one has as much of an impact defensively as does Griner.

Hmm, good question. Especially with all the attention to domestic violence. I guess Rice will get re-instated and win a Civic Award next.

Rice has been reinstated, just no team has picked him up. If his skills hadn't diminished he would be playing right now.

You think he lost his skills after missing one year (or less)? How bout teams don't wanna be bothered with the distraction... and bad publicity

Griner had her most dominant defensive game last night. She won the award based on her play, that should not be so hard for anyone to understand.

Griner was arrested for domestic violence against a woman. She has punched women on the court. That should not be hard for anyone to understand. But it should be hard to overlook.

The same way that Holdsclaw gets inducted into the NYC Hall of Fame.

Your dislike for BG is clouding your objectivity. Let me explain it like a two-year-old so that you and your wife can understand. She was the defensive player of the year based on her defensive skills, she was not voted Ms. Congeniality. Now, had she won that award I would be inclined to agree with you.

Anyway, onward and upward. Congrats to BG!!

Congrats to her. I am glad to see her looking so happy. Depression is a horrible disease, and yes it is a disease, that many misunderstand. But many don't understand things because they don't want to understand. It is much easier for many to sit back and judge because it makes them feel better about who they are.

Yup...you explained it just like a two year old as you said you would. Next time put on your big girl pants.

Rice's peak rushing year was 2009, with 1339 yards, 5.3 yards per carry. That year was followed by 3 more 1000+ yard seasons. Also from 2009 to 2011 he averaged over 70 receptions for about 9 yards per reception. In 2013, his last year, he rushed for only 660 yards and 3.1 yards per carry, and also had only 321 receiving yards at 5.5 yards per catch. He's at the point in his career where most running backs not named Adrian Peterson see this sort of decline, and it's typically permanent.

IMO if he had been at that peak when he was suspended, many teams would be willing to put up with the sideshow. But for a running back on the decline you are correct - nobody wants to be bothered with the distraction.

My problem with Holdsclaw is that our prisons are filled with people who suffer from psychological problems that contributed to their crimes. Holdsclaw gets sympathy from the media only because she is/was a star wbb player. I'd wager that the guy who beat Tucker had psychological problems too but he is labelled a scumbag by the same group that expresses love for Holdsclaw and prays for her. Holdsclaw had been diagnosed and prescribed medication that she decided to stop taking. She had plenty of help and understanding.

Plaxico Burress accidentally shot himself with a licensed pistol and spent 2 years in prison. Holdsclaw put a pistol in her pocket, drove across town and in a fit of anger put a couple of slugs into a former partner's car after dousing it with gasoline and basically walked away without a day of incarceration.

My frustration isn't so much with Holdsclaw herself but with the spin the NY media put on these 2 stories.
