the truly distinguished professor of American literature at Notre Dame, Laura Dessow Walls, has just come out with a terrific biography of Henry David Thoreau. I began it today and it is enthralling: Thoreau comes to life in a way we haven't previously appreciated. Written beautifully for a popular audience and super-highly recommended. The fascinating 2 page description of the development of the pencil industry (Thoreau's dad) is typical of Walls's broad interests and curiosity and alone is worth it.
