Balls!

Good stuff here:

"If you read anything I wrote during March Madness, there’s a good chance you know I like to compare Shabazz Napier to Kemba Walker. These comparisons were initially meant to remind people that even though Napier did pretty much everything for the 2013-14 UConn Huskies, there would never be another Kemba. After all, Kemba’s play in March 2011 made him a college basketball deity and set the standard for individual players carrying their teams to national titles. As UConn’s season developed, though, I slowly found myself buying into the “Shabazz is Kemba” parallel, and when I finally took the plunge on it, I did so for one reason: balls.

Yes, balls. Napier proved time and time again this past season that at least 40 of his 175 pounds come from the oversize titanium sack in his jock. The guy is as fearless a basketball player as you will ever find. (And to be clear, he’s the good kind of fearless. Marshall Henderson was also fearless, but in the Leeroy Jenkins, “I want to be the hero so badly that I ruin everything” way.) Like Kemba before him, Napier made so many big plays at pivotal moments that I began to wonder if he used them for sustenance. Napier’s hero-ball act for an improbable national champion put his name right up there next to Kemba’s in college basketball lore.

This is why Napier is going to be a steal in this year’s draft. Never mind that he’s undersize and doesn’t have NBA-level explosiveness. Never mind that he tends to commit some careless turnovers. That only means he won’t ever be the best player on a NBA title contender, but we already knew that. Napier has a great feel for the game on both offense and defense. He plays his ass off. Even though he’s an able scorer with deep shooting range, I think he’ll be able to impact games at the next level without even taking a shot. He’s also a walking bundle of intangibles, most notably whatever talent it is that allows him to make every shot he attempts in crunch time.

Shabazz Napier may never be an NBA All-Star. But put him on an established playoff team that needs a better point guard (like the Heat, Pacers, or Rockets) and watch him thrive. He won two national titles in his three years of postseason eligibility, and he did it despite being malnourished. Imagine how good he’ll be once he can afford more than one meal every other day."

As I mentioned maybe a month ago - I am hearing the Heat have a strong interest. Time will tell who pulls the trigger.

Literally everyone to opine on the draft has mentioned the Heat as having interest.

But yes, you are correct, "time will tell" where he's going. My sources tell me that we'll find out on June 26.

So pajama basement blogger you think the Heat too? What is your view? I have been told LeBron provided input.

Literally everyone thinks the Heat are a possibility, Chief. What's next, your sources tell you that Wiggins will be a lottery pick?

All I know is that Bazz can ball with anyone, and hold his own. He's been up against a lot of the new guards in the league and played equal or better, including our beloved Kemba. He's a game changer and even if he comes off the bench he's worth keeping around. A 6' foot guard is not unusual in fact many are thriving in the NBA right now. He's got Kemba, Ollie and Calhoun mixture in his blood with some serious hardware (individual and team) to go with it.

He belongs in the NBA, but I will say he will need to be on a team that needs him, appreciates him and does not expect him to dominate freshman year. In other words Bazz needs time and to be surrounded by a strong cast of players. The later in the draft for Bazz the better, that's how I see it.

Here's a recent interview: linky

I still would love Bazz to be on the Rockets more than anything else. I don't know why the Heat wouldn't draft McGary seeing their glaring whole at center. I know they can probably sign a FA like Emeka but I would still draft the young center with plenty of potential for the future. With Lebron you don't necessarily need a good PG.

C'mon this is laughable. The heat have ZERO interest/need at center that would be better addressed in the draft. They need players ready to ball out of the box. They can get a veteran if they really want a center but already have Chris Andersen and Oden. Drafting a center makes no sense at all, especially if they are planning on going after Carmelo.

And Chalmers has been murdering this team all finals. Its ridiculous how well Shabazz would fit there, but there is no way in hell he will be available.

Mitch McGary isn't a good prospect at around 7' and very mobile to be able to run the floor with the Heat and rebound which is something they desperately need? Greg Oden is not a serious option for these guys at center. He can't stay healthy long enough to find serious minutes on the court. They can't continue to rely on the Bosh/Anderson combo as teams with great big get better and better. Like the Pistons, Wizards, Hawks, etc. They have been lucky enough that Hibbert disappears and they don't run into any really bad match ups. It's a lot easier to find and okay or serviceable PG in this league than it is to find a dependable big. The PG position is the deepest position in the league.

I said this before on Bazz part that I would love to see him running and gunning with the Rockets to form a exciting backcourt with James Harden to try and lead them when they are on playoff runs instead of playing catch and shoot with Lebron, Wade, and Bosh. He can do a lot more in the league IMO.
