Nice read:

>>It didn’t take long after Stewart hit the practice field for him to earn a spot with the starting unit alongside All-American candidate Yawin Smallwood and Ryan Donohue as UConn tries to move on after losing Jory Johnsn and Sio Moore (who combined to start 59 career games) to graduation.<<

>>“Being able to sit out last year, watching them and watching film the good thing was I was able to pick up the good traits from both of them,” Stewart said. “They are both guys who can play in the NFL and Sio is excelling (with the Oakland Raiders). I see myself fitting into Sio’s old role but putting my own stamp on the position.“I feel strong being able to pass rush and blitz but at the same time being able to cover a lot of ground.”<<

Spoke with his dad in an airport last year, and the kid was really happy to be at UConn. Said he didn't "fit in" down in Florida. Very different culture down there. Given what we now know, I'd say him not fitting in there is a good thing.

I think it is safe to say that Linebacker is not UConn's #1 weakness. Might be the best group on paper since Wilson, Lloyd, and Lutrus.

It was a good thing that he has been around one year.

It's not like he arrived in June. He has been around this team acclimating to the environment ... and seeing the Sio Moore process unfold. This is a wonderful thing for UConn football. Donahue too. We are good at LB. We should be good on the DL ... Hank Hughes is an unsung hero of the last 14 years. We can be good at CB and S. Excited about this defense.

Impressive young man. Intense. He's going to be fun to watch if he can put himself in the right positions.

"Hank Hughes is an unsung hero of the last 14 years."

Could not agree more and my hope is that if this regime is moved out that Hank will hang in there one more time and keep ship moving in the right direction. I understand why he didn't get the nod when Edsall left, but I wonder what the 2011 and 2012 seasons might have been had he been at the helm.

Hank Hughes is an unsung hero of the last 14 years..

I was going to post this the other day. We're spoiled to have him. How often do you lose you're DC, and you get a guy who might actually have a better resume... and you promote him from within.

Hank Hughes might have been a great choice when Edsall left but I have the feeling the powers that be worried about what type of recruit would be drawn to UConn with 1st year head coach Hughes at the helm and what type of staff could Hughes put together. The bottom line is you have to be able to recruit and too many kids were gonna say to themselves "who's Hank Hughes?" Put that with what Edsall left him on the offensive side of the ball and the complainers in here really would have been screaming for someone's head. You think it's bad now..imagine no Donahue, no Stewart, no Whitmer. I'm not crapping on Hughes. The guy is good but it was just not the right time in the evolution of this program. He may make a great successor to Coach P.... probably will make a great HC...just not in 2011 @ UConn. Better that P take the heat for the program rebuild than a guy in his first go around at HC. P has thick skin.... not sure how Hughes would have recovered from a couple really stinker seasons and then getting canned.
