That must have been a pretty great moment! My one game of golf I played many moons ago would have been pretty good if you didn't have to count all of the swings-and-misses...

In my years of caddying I only witnessed a single hole-in-one, and it was one of the worst drives I ever saw. I had clubbed my guy a 4-iron, and he hit his drive off the right of the fairway into a bunker, from which it took a huge looping bounce leftwards, rolled onto the green and into the cup.

I was the only person in the party who wasn't laughing his ass off - after all, I was looking for a tip. In those days at Brooklawn, the standard rate for a round with a single bag was $4.50, so what does this guy give me?

Five dollars. Total.

Nevertheless, this man became my inspiration in life. Not for being a cheap S.O.B., but for later writing the first self-published book I was ever aware of that wan't classifiable as vanity publishing.

The book was How to Avoid Probate. The cheap S.O.B. was Norman F. Dacey, who was hounded by the legal profession for the rest of his life.

I learned a lesson, though. The first thing I did after deciding to write my dictionary was to consult a lawyer with experience in publishing.

I have had three hole in ones. Ironically, two were on blind greens. One up hill and one down hill where only the top of the pin and flag was visible. The third was the worst shot of all as I skulled a thin shot all the way to the green, onto the green and, finally, off the pin and into the cup. Life is strange.

Strange, indeed. But as Gary Player said, "The more I practice, the luckier I get."
