Shelley played for the Vic Country Girls and the Rangers growing up, Her team reached the nationals at 14 and she received a scholarship to the Centre for Excellence of Sport in Melbourne, which nurtures promising young prospects. “Nine of the girls there are members of this team,” she said. We lived together and have been playing together for six months.”

Hadn't realized what the boy's youth system had evolved to, but it sounds like a good set-up. Especially the two full time employees - coach and scout. But it should be noted that the women's system has been very successful up until this particular age group.

Three thing are clear from that story...... having nine players who regularly play together is a huge advantage............also agree that the 140+ kids trying out is total overkill............and having a full time coach for the team may be a necessity......finally it may be that this age group just doesn't have the overall level of talent as in year's past.........let's see how the older girls do.................

I think what may be missing is that wing player that is creative - posts at this age are almost always a little gawky and need help. Williams tried hard but had a nightmare game yesterday. I think the team was a little light on perimeter players - needed more quickness especially on defense. And international teams will always try to zone USA, so having enough perimeter shooters to compensate for ones having an off night is important. This team had seven forwards none of whom are really used to shooting more than 15 footers. They ended up with Brunelle playing as a spot up shooter which is not really the best use of her.
USA is never likely to have that kind of set-up where a team is together for such a prolonged period.

Watched past of the USA-China game, US won but was still lacking in many areas..........same old song............
