Our Connecticut ladies are really pouring it on.

First, one of our less-heralded alumnae- Kiah Stokes. Last night, with the game on the line and Chicago certain to go to its star EDD, New York went to its sure-fire defender to hold her off and save the game- Kiah Stokes. And for the second time in as many games, Stokes' defense stymied EDD and saved the game.

She's second in the league in rebounds/40 minutes, and in the top 50 in points per 40 minutes, and third in blocks per. Not bad for a kid who couldn't get into the starting rotation at UConn!!

Then there's Tiffany Hayes, who exploded for 27 points last night, and who is now in the top 10 in scoring in the league. Again, not bad for a kid who never made AA while at UConn!! She's scored at least 26 points in three of her last four games.

Maya- with 40 points her last time out, she's equaled DT's career total of 3 40-point games, and got there faster.

Tina- With 29 points last night, she's scored at least 21 points in 10 of her last 11 games.

Breanna- scored in double-digits in all but one game of her rookies season, and leads the league (yes, including Tina) in rebounding.

Sue- leads the league in assists. What else is new?!

Moriah- 5th in the league in assists per 40 minutes. She's well ahead of her rookie cohort, and even leads WNBA sophomores in that category.

While not noticed as much,

Stephanie Dolson- ranks 21st in the league in rebounding.

KML- Waking up now, scoring 19 points her past two games, including (look out, league!!!) 5 of 7 from 3-point range!

Morgan Tuck- while she's flying a bit under the radar, Morgan is ranked 5th in scoring among all WNBA rookies, and 4th in rebounds.

And even the ancient one- Swin Cash- is averaging 5.5 points per game, the highest average with the most mpg in five years.

In short, our Connecticut alumnae are firing up the league! A joy to watch!!

And Renee. :)

EDIT: And just like that I see this from Jim F.

Former UConn Star Montgomery Adjusts To New Role

Earlier in her career former UConn star Renee Montgomery was asked to provide offense whenever she was in the game as she averaged at least 10 points per game in four of her first five seasons.

However, when Montgomery joined a star-studded Minnesota team last July, she wasn't going to be asked to shoot at will. Montgomery was asked to be more responsible with the ball, bring defensive energy off the bench and when given the opportunity to take an open shot.

Montgomery posted the best assist/turnover ratio of her professional career in the 19 regular-season games she played with the Lynx last season. This season she is averaging more steals per 40 minutes of her career.

Not to be picky, but Breanna and Tina are actually tied for rebounding average. They're both great and I love them both. Two of the most likeable basketball players ever IMHO.

And Swin Cash knocked one in from deep in the NYT article on Breanna Stewart: "To who much is given, much is required."
Let's not quibble about leaving off the "m." What other player would have come that close to the right quote?
