Calhoun's assistants told him to leave Giff in because of his D on Young. Kid played 14 minutes, nice call and reward. Nice to have a player low on the depth chart produce. He too is a Champion by the way and I hope he continues to play well. If anything he is not pouting, and that is admirable in itself.

He proved he could play last year. His defense will be useful at times this year. Just because a player is low on the depth chart doesn't automatically mean he lacks ability.

Especially with this roster.

Calhoun loves his game, his minutes tell you that.

On TV the announcers never figured out that JC was going offense/defense with Lamb/Giffey for the final 8 minutes or so. They couldn't figure out why Lamb was sitting.

Just in case anyone else gets confused by the continued lack of proof-reading in Amore's articles ... the game is at Gampel on Thursday, not the XL.

On topic: happy for Giffey. Great effort yesterday.

Right now we seem to have Lamb being the primary "3," with the other 3 being specialists of sorts. DD is the shooter, RS is the defensive stopper/rebounder, and NG is the passer/defender/glue guy. Unless one of them separates himself, it may be using the best fit with the opponent. Right now I do see Giffey as the most versatile of the 3 and think that he could start contributing more points as he gets more comfortable with playing time. Deandre has had some great stretches shooting the ball and making some blocks, but he seems to have difficulty both handling pressure and moving his feet laterally on defense. Roscoe seems to be pressing when he's in and has yet to show the improvement many hoped for from him in being able to handle/drive the ball to the basket.

The good thing about this is that it shows other players that if they work hard in practice that they will get PT.

Agree, I think it is great that all are getting playing time, as they all bring different positives to the table.
Very good game by Niels...hopefully, he will gain confidence in his long-range shot, like we saw in the first night contest

Just to remember didn't Niels start the championship game against Butler. If not he played alot of minutes unless my memory is totally off.

He played 24 minutes and had 6 boards (3 offensive) and 4 points. Especially considering that no one on either team could hit the broad side of a barn in that game so I'm not too concerned about his scoring total, I'd say he had a pretty solid effort out there. Liked what I saw yesterday on defense, too.

Edit: I'm referring to the NC game above.

Olander took the first shot in the national title game and made it. Giffey got solid minutes in that game. Calhoun is a master at building confidence.

Excellent point. Apart from Boatright now taking a lot of PT away from wings since JC is going to play a lot of 3-G sets, Whatever is left over at the 3 is up for grabs to the wing who plays the hardest, smartest and most productive.

We still have not seen the Giffey that dropped 14 against Kentucky at Maui. I still feel he could be a solid BE starter, but we're probably too loaded for him to get extended minutes.

Keep in mind, Lamb is leaving and DD and AD may leave within a year or two. A junior or senior Giffey should find lots of playing time, possibly as a starter. I love his game and hope he see's the opportunity ahead. Giffey can develop into an NBA player if he works hard. He is tall, can leap and knows the game. He showed in international play this summer that he is very good. I don't think the average UConn fan realizes the kind of numbers he put up this summer against very talented competition. It will be a shame if he doesn't use all 4 years with JC to improve.
