. . .at his proverbial coat-tails.

When you visit the SMU Athletics site, you will be confronted by a sort of a cover page. In BIG CAPS, you will read, IT BEGINS. . . 01.04.14. And in the center of that alert are the logos of UConn and SMU. Elsewhere they tout the AAC by informing readers that women's basketball teams in the AAC have won eight national championships! D'OH!

Over on the U. Houston site, their wcbb coach speaks about their wonderful new affiliation with the AAC. With a straight face he reminds viewers that two AAC teams played for the national championship last spring.

Elsewhere the news of the AAC wcbb tournament site -- Mohegan -- is announed with a tidbit about the great support that fans in Connecticut provide for wcbb.

Is this akin to creating a silk purse from a sow's ear?

I await breathlessly for announcements about schedules and ticket sales.

SMU and Houston have each had Heisman trophy winners in football, Houston a near dynasty in MCBB. I wonder if these circumstances will be mentioned by the UCONN website?

Silk and sow's ears have application to all collegiate sports, I do believe.

SMU suffered through an NCAA death penalty in the not too distant past. I can understand why new conference might be perceived as silk by them. I also think it's good to be in a conference with enthusiastic members.

I acknowledge this is just me and that there are those who consider it heresy, blasphemy and egomania to say such things. Fortunately, Connecticut banned executions.

One wonders, as well, who benefits from public pillorying of the AAC? Not UCONN, IMO.

Agreed.

And, the AAC presents an opportunity for SMU to recover provided they win and provided they pay their players no more than anyone else does, or covers it up better than they did before.

I am saying that jokingly.

More exactly, here's what UCONN media guide says on the subject of AAC football opportunity for this season:

"American Athletic Conference teams will have access to the pin- nacle of college football’s postseason structure, both in the coming season and beyond. In 2013-14, the league champion will receive an automatic bid for the final edition of the Bowl Championship Series, including a spot in the VIZIO National Championship Game if it is ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the final BCS standings. Moving forward, The American champion would be chosen for the College Football Playoff semifinals if it is among the top four teams following the regular season. Otherwise, the league would place its champion in either the Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl or Peach Bowl if it is ranked higher than the champions of Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, the Mountain West Conference and the Sun Belt Conference."

As we sit here today, UCONN has a chance to play for a NC in football.

I am saying that jokingly, too :-o

Although SMU may never fully recover from the death penalty it would be more precise (though perhaps unjustifiably optimistic) to say that SMU has not yet recovered. . . .

Last thing I want to do is laugh at a conference mate who admires the program I'm rooting for. It sounds too much like a Summit fan!

This is exactly what BE WCBB teams were doing ten to fifteen years ago so I say go for it. With the exit fees Uconn may well be at home in the AAC for a number of years and the better support other schools give to WCBB the better for Uconn.

Kib, check the tense. Saying "has never" is present perfect continuing and is "perfectly" accurate. To the present SMU has not recovered, it is impossible to speak of the future and what it may or may not be. I defined the present. SMU "has never" fully recovered to date. At no point since the death penalty has SMU approached its past FB glory. To say "Not yet" implies the unlikely event and unpredictable future you mentioned.

If at the end of the day 11/16 UCONN has lost to SMU all these reports of SMU's death may be premature.

Just sayin'

Kib not Jib

Icebear lives with the constant burden of his iPhone taking non-words and 'correcting' them into common words. Either that, or his bear paws are too wide for the standard keyboard!
