I have a hard time understanding Geno's warm remarks concerning Jeff in the light of the bludgeoning of our team the other day. Does he hold Walz blameless for that?
I hope he is so asked.

Geno explained it in the postgame presser the other night. He said that Walz was shorthanded and there was no way Louisville was going to win by running up and down the court with the Huskies. The only chance the Cards had was to make the game as ugly as possible, which is what they did. Geno's beef wasn't with Jeff Walz; it was with the refs.

Last night I dug up the dvd of the 2003-2004 season (Diana's farewell). A couple things reminded me of the Louisville game.
  • When UConn played Penn State (NCAA tournament), Barbara Turner was assigned the task of shutting Kelly Mazzante down. Very early in the game, BT gave Kelly a couple fore-armed shivers (NFL style) as Mazzante cut through the center and that helped take KM out of the game (psycholically if not physically).
  • Shoe on the other foot. A series of cuts by Diana were shown in rapid sequence, showing how often she got mugged.
  • I was reminded once again just how great Diana was.
  • I suffered through that damned Duke game and the Foley buzzer-beater. Strangely I found those silver uniforms to be really attractive. I wish we had won the game and kept those uniforms.
Mrs. Kibitzer and I will attend the Georgetown game, then head for Chuck's/Margarita's for post-game dinner. Be forewarned that I now have a motorized wheel chair but no learner's permit to drive it. If you stand still, watch your back!

Actually, I believe officials do what they are told to do. That's why certain officials show up for certain games. Some are better at it than others . This goes for all sports. Geno knows what's going on. So do the players. Only the fans are naive.

I really hope you were kidding. The powers that be told the refs to call every foul
on UC but ignore any fouls by LV ? Since we are going for the rediculous ( not meant to be rude) I think Sally Bell and Dee Canter have it in for either Geno or UC or both. I just made myself rewatch game and there were so many made up and missed calls to count. The point is not anything to do with our klosing because we won but it could have led to a serious injury.

Injuries are my main concern in a game like that. Sure, I like to see "some" body contact, and every small infraction of contact cannot be called. Any coach who sees his players being knocked and thrown around (in a more than usual way) and doesn't think the opposing coach approves of such play is holding back his true emotions and will "get even" a little further down the line.
I don't know if it has ever happened, but some day I would like to see a coach whose team is subjected to brutality take his team off the court and go to the locker room.
Frustration leads to bullying, and you see it in every sport.

Except that serious injuries, that lead to players missing games, or worse, don't seem to occur in games like that.

I mentally reviewed all the serious injuries UConn has experienced since I started following the team, starting with Shea's first ACL injury in 1997. All the injuries that I recalled were the result of the player injured doing something on her own, none were a result of anything an opposing player did.

I hate to sound like a prude, but is ugly basketball what a good coach should be teaching his or her players? Of the top teams, the most obvious team that plays ugly is Notre Dame. Yes, the refs are at fault for allowing it. As Geno has said, they don't want to stop the game in its tracks but isn't that encouraging these physical battles that could result in serious injury. Geno protested the first half of Louisville's play at halftime and I believe I saw that Rebecca Lobo tweeted a comment during the game about how someone was going to be injured.
