If you watched the Uconn girls last night, they were very impressive in the half court. Excellent high post pick and roll and pick and pop. Excellent high post with back cuts. Very good job with staggered screens to free up their jump shooters. Impressive.

21 assists for 23 baskets. Not as unwatchable as some would have you think.

They do run some great stuff. It's all predicated on their 4's and 5's (Dolson and Faris, who's just as much of a point guard as anyone else on their roster) being excellent passers. They run everything through those two players at the high post.

It would be high comedy if we tried to run stuff like that.

Having skilled bigs is a great advantage.

Look at the big men left in the Final Four:
Anthony Davis
Sullinger
Thomas Robinson
T. Jones
and even some of those who went out in the Elite 8:
Henson
P. Jones

Those teams thrive because their big guys have skills that extend out past the foul line. I wouldn't mind recruiting some bigs who can do more than score and defend the post (although given what we had last year, I'd settle for just that). But that doesn't seem to be JC's style.

Count the number of bounces the men's guards take in the 1/2 court. The girls move the ball and use the skip pass effectively. The girls run the back door cut to perfection as well. They actually look to pass and the guys don't.

Heard from somebody that during practice when they work on the offense Geno puts 7 players on defense. Dont know how common this is but its pretty simple and i cant help but think it probably helps a lot.

Given how they defend, I wonder if they practice against 7 players on offense too.

Geno is a downright special coach, and along with JC we've been lucky to have two of the best of all time in their respective sports. 10 championships between them in the last 18 years is ridiculous.

Couldn't agree more. We have been blessed to watch two legendary HOF coaches. Last night, Geno was certainly on his "A" game. His move to a zone defense and the lack of UConn fouls in the 2nd half was the key. He is certainly one of the best in college basketball.

i played against the girls team quite often when i was at UConn. while we beat them about 50% of the time they could get a wipe open shot just about whenever they wanted. they ran really impressive stuff and just when you caught on to what they were doing and cheated they had variations to compensate for the over play. we were all 6'3+ athletes so we would just out jump them... but they were incredibly impressive and i've had a greater appreciation for them since.

This year's woman's team has some huge vulnerabilities and Geno has taken them to the final four. This year may be his best coaching job.

Yet, he's not on any list for Coach of the Year nominees. As for the players, UConn has no WBCA All-Americans and only Tiffany Hayes made the 3rd team AP All-America list. The Duke kid, Elizabeth Williams, is winning all the Freshman of the Year awards over Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis. UConn has no talent whatsoever. :)

While I don't typically watch a lot of the women's games, I caught most of last night's game.
Geno's halftime adjustments were outstanding.
I thought it would be close the whole game. Not so much.

Yeah good call sparky, same game, same athletes huh? C'mon different world no doubt but then again how would you know if you think the guys "don't pass"?

Geno is so much better at coaching his kids than the average womens coach it's unbelievable...but of course the fact he can win with a slow team, less athletic than many of the higher echelon teams he coaches against kinda tells you how good the other coaches are....not very! He said something interesting about Pat Summitt and that she coaches them like guys or bball players rather than women.....so true. Most womens coaches are really not good at all and he is so far ahead of the game he can even win with less talent. Add Stewart, Tuck and Jefferson from what I see and hear it's no contest next year even with Griner staying!

Geno did an outstanding job last night. Whatever adjustments he made worked to perfection as they ran away from UK. The men's and women's game simply isn't the same, but what he has done is impressive.

7 titles in 17 years is impressive. That's John Wooden good.

I would love to see him take a men's bball job at some point, although not at UConn. I know it won't happy, but I'd just like to know the result.

John Wooden good? lol......yeah in the womens game not the mens.....please let's not compare the 2 you can't.......it is closer to when Wooden was coaching though because reality is the parity sucked in the mens game when Wooden was was winning too...........

Geno is very good and I think he could win in the men's game, maybe not at BE level but somewhere!!!

He has coached his son and other guys (including Aaron Hernandez) in AAU ball. He prefers coaching people that actually listen to him. He could win at any level if they listened.

You think the players don't listen to Calhoun? Men's basketball players listen too. I think Geno could win in the Men's game but it's a different style of play altogether so he would have to change certain things about his style to match the style of play. But in general I think a great basketball mind is a great basketball mind.

UConn is to women's basketball today what John Wooden's UCLA teams were to college basketball. I am not saying that I think if Geno went and coached men he would dominate like Wooden because even if he was every bit the coach Wooden was, achieving what Wooden did is simply impossible today in the men's game.

You made my point for me when you said that it is closer to when Wooden was coaching. Did you think I was comparing what Geno is doing in the women's game to what Wooden was doing 10 years ago?

I was agreeing with that point quite honestly and just saying what anyone does/did in the womens game, including Pat, cannot be compared to the mens game ever. So much easier it's not funny. And having the #1 seeds in the FF and all win fairly easily tells you all you need to know about the game!

How are his son and Aaron doing in hoops? I saw Aaron play in HS, he was a very good player in HS at Bristol Central so I'm not sure of your point 68.........I like Geno and he's the best in the women's game from what I see and it's not too close.......I have no doubt he could win somewhere, his offenses are excellent and his teams play great defense........but the teams he plays against, 90% have crappy coaches and terrible players in comparison........while I believe his team is less talented than in recent years and he did a great job, they are still much more talented than al but 3 or 4 teams..........

He may be good at an Ivy League where he could run his offense, or a low to mid major possibly......heck he may be okay in a higher divy 1 school but what we see him doing on the court in the womens game doesn't guarantee that........your reference to "......people that actually listen.." is pretty funny. Of course they listen they aren't good enough to do the things the mens players can do so coaching becomes even more important......imagine winning 3 NC's without kids listening to you???? That's even more impressive then I guess!!;)

If Geno could recruit the same level of talent in men as he has in woman, he would then be just as successful in the men game.

Except those top mens players arent there all 4 years, if Maya Moore, Taurasi, Charles were guys they would have left after their sophomore or junior or even freshmen year. I could see Geno being a successful mid major coach.

It's pretty nice when you get to pick 3 out of the best 10 players every year.

Not taking away anything from Geno but he wins most of his games before they start.

That's not to say he's not a good coach.

But I have a couple comments. First of all, most women's team don't execute like the Huskies do. Ever watch a bad women's game? Yikes. Second, the passing lanes are wide open because the bodies are smaller and the players are less athletic. That sort of passing is an Ivy League gimmick in the men's game. Believe me, every team wants to pass the ball well. It's a little more difficult with a bunch of 6'7" 220 pound athletic freaks getting in the way.

I'm not saying that those facts makes women's basketball "better" or "worse" than men's basketball -- if you prefer the women's game, then wear your CPT tote bag with pride.

But I do wonder how many people who prefer the women's team would still feel that way if the team hadn't won 95% of its games and 7 titles over the last 15 years or whatever.
