If this has been posted earlier, my apologies. I did not see it.

Connecticut women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma is closing in on his 1,000th career victory; it could come Tuesday when the Huskies face Oklahoma at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

When Auriemma took over the Huskies in 1985, the program had only one winning season -- at 16-14 -- in its 11-year history. Since, UConn has won 11 NCAA titles and 999 games under Auriemma.

Interesting---40 percent of Uconn GREATEST wins were over the Lady Vols of Tenn. One against ND, Too bad this 1000ths win will not be against Tenn.

I would say the 10 greatest are the national championship games. No greater game than the last one of the season.

Great list by Voepel. Good work.

January 16, 1995. MLK day. No UConn victory will ever again feel that satisfying. The day of glory and tears.

I think #6 (April 2, 2000: 71-52 over Tennessee) should be higher. That's the one that put UConn on the top of the heap and left PHS muttering to herself. No longer was the UT style of recruiting the best athletes and motivating them within an inch of their lives (while screaming rebounding and defense) going to be good enough. From then on skill and scoring were going to have to be part of the mix.

Thanks for posting. I really enjoyed this article by Voepel, and I'm glad she chose some of the more relatively obscure early wins, such as:
  • the 1989 win over Providence to secure UConn's first Big East championship
  • the 1990 win over Auburn, for UConn's first win over a ranked team
  • the 1991 win over Clemson to advance to UConn's first Final Four
I just wish there was footage available from these games!
