When the final buzzer goes off and UConn’s season comes to an end, the work doesn’t stop for coach Geno Auriemma. The end of the season, even the end of the spring semester, doesn’t mark the end of his preparations, nor does it signal the start of an easier time of the year. According to Auriemma, summer is one of his busiest seasons.
In the first three weeks of August, before classes start again, you might find him at a Red Sox game or vacationing on a beach, but the months between the end of the season and August are the months in which Auriemma is out recruiting and fundraising. He flies across the country, racking up airline miles, as he visits high school recruits and goes to summer tournaments in an attempt to find the next UConn great.
