Geno wins AP COY.

Per Mechelle Voepel:

UConn coach Geno Auriemma was moved to tears talking about being here at Women's Final Four, his and his program's 17th, saying it's not something to ever take for granted. It's rare to see the normally wise-cracking Auriemma get choked up, but this team and season clearly means a great deal to him ... Auriemma said this Women's Final Four has a special feel to him, and he's been very emotional talking about it during the ceremony just now.

UConn's Geno Auriemma wins AP Coach of the Year for 8th time

An 8th COY is an incredible achievement. I think he and most of us would want the attention at this time of the year to be on the players' awards (and the games, natch), but maybe after the season we can at some point step back and let this one sink in.

You do not dethrone the player of the year unless she plays poorly and someone else outplays her so Stewie deserved it. Geno deserved coach of the year even more. He and his staff developed Napheesa and Lou into valuable parts of the team. Freshmen on other teams either make it or don't. Geno and the coaches do not let them meander and insist they develop by the end of their first year. Lou has been great over the last few weeks and Napheesa played a big role against Texas. Plus, with the failure of the other top teams, how could you give the award to anyone else?

Henry - agree, though it is always hard to decide when the coach of a dominant team is deserving of the award vs. someone who has taken an after-thought of a team further than anyone would believe.
On players - not so sure - That is like saying if you are an AA and play well the next year then someone new who plays lights out still has to wait for you to graduate - not buying that.

I don't think there should be a Wooden Award for women. There is no Wade Trophy for men. Having so many different NPOY awards diminishes the significance of each. Part of the drama of college football is the race for the Heisman Trophy. It has been very effective in marketing the sport. The Wade Trophy used to really mean something. Now it is just one of many.

Women don't play football and football has too many bowl games=participation trophies.
And while you are at it get rid of these major college football awards also. The Heisman should be enough right?

I appreciate the research....unless you knew these all in your mind, in which case I am impressed....My point was entirely about NPOY awards, and not about more specialized ones (limited by position or function, for which WCBB has some others). Which of the above listed by you are NPOY awards?

I'm of an age where short term memory would not allow me to know all of these from memory so no need to be impressed. Google is a powerful thing. My overall point is that WCBB different than Football different than MCBB. Let them all be great in their respective lanes.
