8. Camille. Catastrophic storm, at that time, only the second Cat 5 in the 20th century to hit the US ( I believe the Florida Keys Labor Day hurricane in the '30's was the first). One thing I didn't know about Camille, until I lived in Charlottesville, VA, was that, as she died out over the Blue Ridge, she dumped over 2 feet of rain in one night. This caused horrific flash flooding in some of the poorest areas of VA, wiping out small mountain communities, killing over 100 people.
