The No. 7 UConn women's basketball team (19-5, 13-1) returns to the XL Center for the second time this week to host Marquette (18-8, 11-6) tonight at 7 p.m. ET. The game will air on SNY and the UConn Sports Network. With a win Wednesday, UConn will clinch the 2021-22 BIG EAST Regular Season Championship. The Huskies have won 27 conference regular season titles.
Senior Christyn Williams scored 19 points as UConn beat Georgetown, 90-49, last Sunday. Sophomore Nika Mühl and Caroline Ducharme set career highs with six steals each. The Huskies had a season-high 21 steals vs. the Hoyas. The Huskies scored 39 points off turnovers and 26 fastbreak points vs. Georgetown. Freshman Azzi Fudd had 12 points while Mühl had 11.
The Huskies beat Marquette two weeks ago with Ducharme and Nelson-Ododa unavailable. They lived at the perimeter, going 10-for-20 on 3-point shots. Now the Huskies have those two back and will have more options to attack the rim and more opportunities to experiment. In the midst of a tight late-season schedule, the ability to play an extended rotation will help the Huskies in this game and beyond. The Huskies are home for their final three regular season games. Senior forward Olivia Nelson-Ododa leads the squad in both rebounds (7.9) and assists (3.9) per contest. UConn leads the league and ranks second nationally in field goal percentage (.482). It also boasts the BIG EAST's second-best field goal percentage defense (.368). The Huskies rank sixth in the nation in assists per game with 18.5, and have a 1.30 assist-to-turnover ratio, ninth in the country.
The Golden Eagles enter the contest 18-8 on the year with a 11-6 mark in BIG EAST play to sit fifth in the league standings with just three games left to play. Most recently, MU posted a 64-57 win at Georgetown on Friday night in Washington, D.C.
The Golden Eagles are 38-15 in conference action under Coach Duffy. Coach Duffy is off to the best coaching start through three seasons of any coach in program history. She boasts a 61-23 overall mark (.726) at Marquette. The Golden Eagles are 51-3 under Coach Duffy when leading at halftime and 36-3 when they turn the ball over the same or fewer times than their opponent.
MU is 31-3 when scoring more than 70 points under Coach Duffy and 42-5 when shooting more free throws than its opponent. In the 84 games of the Coach Duffy era, the Golden Eagles have out-rebounded their opponent in 71 of those games.
This game was originally slated for Dec. 29, but postponed because of COVID health and safety protocols. The teams met up just 10 days prior on Dec. 13 at the Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee, a 72-58 win for UConn. MU is 0-13 all-time against the Huskies.
