The key to defeating the triple option is killing the QB. Hit him on every play. Hit him and make him pitch. Destroy him.

I'm not a big Greg Schiano fan but he understood this (Edsall doesn't) and he had a great record versus Navy. Once you get the QB sore and worrying about survival, the offense slows down and the TOs come.

Easier said than done.

1). Travis Jones and Caleb Thomas need to stop the FB dive.
2). The DE need to stay at home against the QB and hit him hard.

3). Our LB and Corners need to defeat the blocks.
This is a bad matchup for the D. If it rains though that could help neutralize most of their Offense

The other aggressive option is you crash the DEs down hard along the line and blow up the option and have the OLBs maintain outside leverage with the CBs filling. It make you vulnerable to the pass, but I’d rather have them beating us on the pass.

And you can’t run a 3 front unless you want 25 yard interior chunks all day.

I have nothing but bad memories of Edsall defending the triple option.
My memories are the same but they're interpreted differently. That game at the Rent where the unprepared team got steamrolled in the 1st half, I'm sure HCRE went off at halftime. First play from scrimmage in the 2nd half, the entire team commits to the handoff and the QB pulls it back and throws it to a receiver open by 20 yards for an 80 yard TD. That was comedy gold.

Well that's an angry post.

Honestly...I don't remember that. My apologies.

It's Monday morning. I apologize for my tone. Having said that, it is not as if message boards generally and this one particularly don't try to pretend that all data supports their conclusions.

Here are the last 4 games vs Navy:

2002: W 38-0 @ Navy
2006: L 41-17 @ UConn (Navy's first play threw a 77 yard TD pass)
2015: L 28-18 @ UConn (UConn got onside kick with 7:20 to go, then 3 drives: Downs, Downs, fumble)
2016: L 28-24 @ Navy (The game Diaco screwed up at the end when UConn was on the Navy 1 yard line.)

Based on history, UConn should be competitive, but I don't think the run defense is good enough this year. Navy's QB, Malcolm Perry has rushed for 934 yards, 6.4 yards per carry, and 14 TDs. The top 2 RBS: 419 yards, 4.2 YPC, 6 TDs, and 290 yards, 10.4 YPC, 5 TDs. That will be tough to stop.

On the other hand, Navy has thrown 56 times, or an average of 8 times per game.

Common opponents:

USF: Navy won 35-3 at Navy, UConn lost 48-22 at UConn.

Tulane: Navy won 41-38 at Navy, UConn lost 49-7 at Tulane.

Bottom line, the point spread seems about right as UConn will have to play great D to have a chance to win the game.

So you don't remember the time we shut them out in Annapolis because of Alzheimers or because you only allow yourself to remember Edsall's failures?
That was in a rain storm, Navy had trouble hndling the ball, and Marice Llyod played his butt off, he lived in the backfield.
