So when they got to the end of a contract, the old TV stars had to think very hard about renewing. The problem is that Mad Men does not pay that well at all. I think Hamm makes $250k per episode for a 12 or 13 episode season. Once he is done paying advisers and the government, that is not much for a star. The supporting cast gets much less.
