It was great to see the team in action again. It's been a long off season. Here are a few of my observations based on watching the All-Access video twice. Of course, they were playing against a much weaker opponent, so my optimism might be over the top for some.
Geno was like a mad scientist last night with his substitution pattern. I would guess he had around 20 different lineups during the course of the game. I loved the Stokes, Dolson, Stewart front line. And I loved how he made both groups of Yarders happy by starting Jefferson in the first half and Tuck in the second. He is keeping us guessing.
Hartley looked like the Hartley of two years ago. Better shooting, ball handling and decision making.
Watch Jefferson's feet when she is playing on the ball defense. So quick. I don't think the hand checking rule will impact her much. She is so quick, she gets to the spot with her body and not her hands.
Dolson is slimmer, quicker, smarter and prettier (my wife pointed that out).
KML moves so well for a "big boned" woman. Not as athletic, but she is turning into the versatile player that Moore was for UConn.
Stewart padded her stats by missing a shot, rebounding and then putting it in the basket. Did that a few times. What a selfish player...lol.
Tuck rushed a few outside shots, but using her ample posterior, she easily carved out space in the post for easy entry passes. And she finished around the hoop better than last year.
Stokes looked engaged this game. I heard from someone she wasn't engaged with the first night scrimmage. I was worried.
Banks. Banks. Banks. Much closer to 100% than 80%. She showed NO fear in her knee. Months ago, I saw an interview with her on her rehab and I knew she would be ready for the season. Of course re-injury is always there for fans to worry about. But we don't have to worry about her performance.
Chong looked nervous early. Better later. I am looking forward to the second exhibition game to see her improvement. I loved the skills I saw.
Walk-ons were great. I can only imagine how they feel in a huddle with players like Stewart etc. They didn't embarrass themselves and look to be 3-5 minute players. It will help.
Overall, the game was what you would expect. But if you look past the skill and size disparity, there was a lot to be happy with this early in the season.
