UConn women prepare to take on ECU tonight.
"UConn (19-2/8-0) host ECU (11-10/2-6) tonight at the XL Center. The game will be broadcast on SNY/ESPN3 and the UConn IMG Sports Network.
UConn is back home for one of the longest stretches of the season, and the No. 5 Huskies are hoping getting back into a routine that will help them fix some of their recent issues, starting with tonight's game.
UConn is 9-0 all-time vs. ECU. The Pirates are coming off a 63-61 win over Tulane last Saturday. This season, Lashonda Monk leads the team with 12.9 points per game while Raven Johnson has 12.6 points per game and leads ECU with 6.4 rebounds per game.
"UConn is coming off an exhausting week of games, including a loss to Louisville, and coach Geno Auriemma said the upcoming home games couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. Both he and associate head coach Chris Dailey said the next two weeks at home offer players a chance to get back into a rhythm they’re used to and comfortable with.
“I think any time you can be in a routine it’s helpful," Dailey said. “I think the kids feel comfortable. They’re in a good spot and a good place. All we can do is move forward. It’s not the end of the world. That’s the part that amazes me, but we’re just trying to get better every day.”
Wednesday night will be their first chance to test the simpler version of their game plan, and they’ll attempt to do it against a team that hasn’t given the Huskies much trouble in the past. UConn has won all nine games it’s played against ECU, and the Pirates currently sit at the bottom of the AAC tied with 3 other teams with a record of 11-10 and 2-6 in conference play.
One of the problems the Huskies would like to fix against the Pirates is shooting, which has touched every player at some point this season. Right now, their best shooter is going through a bit of a slump. Senior Katie Lou Samuelson has had a few down games, failing to make shots she would normally hit with ease".
UConn would do well to fix what they can now."
Looking ahead - #12 South Carolina (16-5) will be in town (XL Center) in 5 days for a BIG Monday showdown with the Huskies on Feb 11. The Gamecocks would love nothing better than to catch the Huskies out of sync and out of rhythm and leave town with a win. This will be the last ranked opponent UConn will play before the NCAA tournament begins. The women's tournament selection show is set for Monday, March 18. The first round of games will be on March 22 and 23.
