Back-court is secured, we got a piece of the front court, and Sid at the 3 moving forward.

Between Bouknight, Gaffney, Sid, and Akok, we have a really athletic team to look forward too. And this years class isn't even done.

Here's Gaffney, Bouknight is post #6

There's been a few posts here saying Gaffney needs to work on his handle. Not from watching this. Free throws were automatic too, but no outside shots.
One defender against him was Mashburn Jr. Looked big and strong and he's supposed to be on our list. And was Lecque one of the guys Gaffney beat on a drive?

That is a highlight, of course it isn't going to show a weak handle.

His handle is weak for a high major point guard. No way around that right now.

Most overlooked aspect of his game is his passing. He has an assist rate of 28% on the season, high for a pure PG never mind a scoring combo. He does a really good job at finding the open man when defenses collapse on him. This should translate well he’s going to be surrounded with shooters CV, AG, Bouk, Akok, Polley...

Bouknight is a total stud. Very complete player. And he looks fully healthy too.

No he doesn't. Did you read any of the comments from people watching the game yesterday?

He reinjured his knee a few weeks ago and *apparently* it showed in the first half, especially.

Edit: Also a big fan of Bouknight's back cut right at the end of the second half. and the cut down the middle on an OOB. That's a play we haven't seen recently--high IQ stuff.

I like what Bouk DOESNT doesnt do much as what he does do. He doesn’t turn he ball over, dribble too much, take many off balance acrobat shots. He would fit right in with the playing style of our women’s team. High IQ kid, in some ways similar to Klay Thompson.

Lots to like a couple notes:

1. Gaffney is dynamic but not at the expense of simplicity. he is always going north-south and I loved that when he went to the rim, there was not a lot of double clutching. It was right to the front of the tin. He also showed some ability to make shots through traffic. He also has a textbook free throw balance and form, feels like an 80+% shooter based on the eye test and his stats back that up. Huge.

2. Bouknight looked solid, love the 3 pt release/form. Loved the off-ball cutting. Feels a bit more like a Rip Hamilton player than a Rashad Anderson type player.(disclosure not talking quality, just style). Strugged finishing around the rim, which is kind of one of those you have it or you don't type skills IMO so that is concerning. However on the positive, he clearly knows how to use his body and draw fouls in that position. This has been my biggest gripe about Jalen Adams over the years. You get down there you need to finish or get a foul.

Excited for these guys to get on the court for us next year.

He's usually a superb finisher, even against elite talent (his hangtime helps). My guess is that the recent injury was in his head a little bit, and it showed.

Gaffney looks like an absolute beast, don't know how his ranking is what it is. Not that I care about rankings, but what are these guys looking for. Dude torched a top high school team nationally. Dude's a steal.

Empire Invitational Recap from Brian Snow of 247Sports.

Future looks bright in Storrs

Connecticut Head Coach Danny Hurley had to be happy with what he saw on Sunday at the Empire Invitational. Two of his commitments, four-star James Bouknight and three-star floor general Jalen Gaffney each played very well.

Gaffney was especially impressive with his play. In a surprisingly decisive victory over Brewster Academy, it was Gaffney who was the best player on the floor. The future Connecticut point guard controlled the action on both ends, and finished with a very impressive line.
