"We have five of the eight national championship contenders are Big East schools so I guess a shout out should go out to all the (Big East) presidents to having the foresight to tear apart the greatest basketball conference that has ever existed," Auriemma said on a Wednesday conference call. But basketball coaches, I am sure Rick (Pitino) and Jim Boeheim, Muffet (McGraw), Jeff (Walz) and I feel that we wouldn't want to be anywhere else . We wished it didn't happen but we have no control over it. I guess it is a great swan song. If it is going to end, it is a great way for it to end."

Geno's candor:

"believe me I have acted like an idiot at practice more times than I can ever recount."

I don't know if he was trying to think politically correct response, if he was trying to see both sides but shuddering at the effort, if he was picturing how he would feel if his son were on that team taking that abuse, or if he was mentally revisiting his practice habits and wondering how his approach would be interpreted...

I wouldn't question his methods because apparently his players really really love him but I bet he was just blown away by this

If this incident causes every coach in America to spend a quiet moment honestly self evaluating their own behaviors with their players against what an impartial outside view would see, then that might be a good consequence of this event.

Certainly, Geno curses like a sailor, and I read an anecdote where he crawled under the stands and rolled into a ball because he was so upset with how his kids were playing. I imagine his antics, especially if edited for only the worst moments, would not be flattering.

I doubt he's thrown balls at one of his kids. Or cursed anyone out. There's a difference between cursing while yelling at someone and cursing someone out. For instance, you can say, "What are you doing?!" or you can say, "You motherFer!" In one case the profanity is simply for emphasis, whereas in the other you are directly addressing profanity at someone.

This is what I posted on the other thread and I think it is important to remember - I didn't mention Geno, but was think that there could be a 5 minute highlight tape made of him that would certainly offend.
While this is really UGLY behavior [RU men's coach] please also remember that this is 7 hours of video that has been edited down to 5 or 10 minutes out of about 1000 hours of practice over 2 years. I am not defending anything here, but I bet you could do this kind of thing with a lot of coaches (on the verbal side, not the physical side) and create a very nasty looking 5 minutes.
Again, not defending this guy or anything like this in coaching, just saying that in our video age and 'gotcha' culture of sound bites over substance it is a very dangerous world for anyone in authority. None of us look good 24/7/365, but luckily most of us are not newsworthy even when we fall on our faces.
