FSU flap fails to recognize what's on the ACC horizon

This writer believe the ACC's future is looking brighter...with a lot of "if's" of course, FSU staying put....and oh yeah adding Notre Dame. Where have we heard that before.

I liked the article until the writer began discussing ND. I just don't see them joining a conference. Unless of course they take the lead in forming a new one...

He comes across as a locally biased reporter when he suggests that Notre Dame covets the ACC academics over the Big Ten. The Big Ten has an equivalent academic reputation. It's true that they two are the only options for that reason.

I don't understand why the ACC doesn't force ND's hand. Push FSU out the door, invite UConn and Rutgers, thus collapsing the Big East. ND's choices would be few. The Big 12 doesn't have the academics, or reach in the east. The Big Ten would offer them a spot, and would need to fill the other one. The ACC would offer them a spot in a conference that truly covers the Boston to DC corridor. Cut a deal with the Giants to play the conference championship in NY and it would be appealing. The Big Ten would pull out the stops as well, and ND could probably choose their dance partner. But the big sell for the ACC is that Notre Dame could win it without having to knock out Ohio State, Michigan, Nebraska or Wisconsin. It's better if FSU leaves. Hell if Notre Dame joined the ACC with UConn and RU, the ACC should hope that Clemson leaves for the SEC, and try to recruit Penn State. They'd have a real shot at it.

Even if you assume that ND doesn't ever want to join a conference, there is a huge risk in them sitting back and waiting "as long as they possibly can" as many suggest. There will always be a place for ND at the table, no matter how long they wait, but they may be picking among tables where everyone else is seated, the table is set and the meal is served. If they choose the ACC or Big Ten (which are the only two choices) now, they can influence whom they are sharing the table with.

My opinion is that if ND is not in serious discussions now, they are doing themselves a disservice (not that I give a damn about whether the Irish harm themselves or not). That having been said, my guess is that ND is in fairly regular contact with both the ACC and the Big Ten these days about what kind of a deal they could get if they entered.

i think at this point they would be in talks with the b12 and b10 and not the acc. i mean if they got to the point of pulling the trigger, don't you think they could make a eastern division in the b12 with wvu/fsu/miami/gt who ever else and pick a catholic school from texas to give them a 8 team division?

I still don't see ND in any hurry to join a conference. Also, I don't think having 16 members would preclude any conferences from still welcoming ND at some point in the future.

You would think if ND wants to go to the ACC they won't let FSU go to the B12. They will probably speak up before that happens. Otherwise, you pretty much know the ND/ACC stuff is b.s.

Maybe the Irish could force the XII to take Temple.

More seriously, no, I can't for the life of me imagine why the Irish would ever want the XII when it can have the Ten. Less prestigious schools, in a part of the country they don't care about and is further away, without being easier on the field. The ACC they stay on the East Coast, with more prestigious schools, and don't have to fight Texas and Oklahoma for championships,

It will be the Big Ten or the ACC. There are no other possiblities.

Now that the Big East has become the new CUSA.

I'm sure a smallish private school with a well regarded academic reputation would join a conference thousands of miles from its alumni base, that contained Texas Tech and Iowa State.

When I went to Asheville, North Carolina I was a little surprised that the wedding I was going to was held at a decent sized catholic church, instead of a Baptist or other evangelical church. Notre Dame's students (and hence alumni) aren't just from the upper midwest (where the B10, but not the B12 has a presence), in fact more of them live in the northeast, mid-atlantic and even Carolinas.

I think the opposite. I think one of the main reasons that ND hasn't joined a conference, apart from their independent streak, is fear. I think they fear the competition in the Big Ten. In the ACC, not so much.

ND cares about their academics. The Big 12 has basically TX as a top academic school and nothing else; the Big 10 and ACC have much more to offer on that level. Oh, the BE too, lol.
