I used to work at ESPN several years ago. I remember we had this big celebration for the ESPN 2 network, we hit a milestone, something like 50 million viewers in 10 years. Fox had recently purchased several local affiliates nation wide and they're regional sports networks reached that same number in under 18 months through acquisition. ESPN had spent all this money building the network from the ground up and Fox comes in and purchased one.
So even though ESPN pays all of this money for national rites to broadcast certain sports, Fox still gets the regional coverage. This was a classic example of ESPN caught sleeping at the wheel.
