one of the worst targeting calls I've ever seen and Nebraska loses their starting safety the rest of the game. 21-21 at the half

The targeting calls are out of control. It's almost as if some of these refs think it is the Matrix where guys can stop in mid air, etc. Christ, we all want people to be safe, but at the end of the day this is a game played by very explosive people and collisions are going to happen. Hell, these guys are calling stuff for what amounts to a normal tackle now.

Not to rule out overzealous or simply incorrect calls by refs, what if the definition of normal tackling in American football has and is evolving now spearheaded by Pete Carroll, Urban Meyer, and other leading coaches? Or, perhaps the 2 possibilities are not mutually exclusive.

With increasingly non-debatable medical research, negative diagnoses of some NFL players and veterans, increased media coverage, the Concussion movie which just opened, etc., whether some people like it or not, high tackles, head shots, etc. appear on the way out and preventative calls will continue to increase (good and bad calls alike).
