Andrew signed with URI today...
I'm bummed we didn't go after him. Andrew is a D1 talent, who would have looked good in Husky blue. But he has to do what's best for him and his family. I wish him well and look forward to following his continued development.

I thought he looked good in the championship game (only game I saw), but maybe we have better athletes coming in. Wish him the best at URI.

I am sure if UConn still wants him, they can still get him. He will have a blast playing for URI and that is a very competitive FCS league. But lets be honest, if we are "losing" kids to URI, then we are in much worse shape than I thought. And if we are missing on a local talent, there are many other FBS schools that feel the same way.

No kidding. UConn lost a kid to URI? What next, University of South Carolina loses a coveted recruit to Samford? Come on, we need to be competing with BCS schools for recruits not the NEC. Geez what direction is this program going in? And, all we hear is that PP is a good recruiter? And he loses a kid to URI? What a joke.

So...how do you know we "lost" him to URI? The only person in this thread who has any link to HS sports that I know of (Kris1) says "I'm bummed we didn't go after him". Doesn't sound like 'lost' to me. Sounds like UConn made a decision for whatever reason (grades, position depth, character issue, talent), that he wasn't the right guy for UConn. Not saying that the kid doesn't have the talent to play at UConn...just doesn't appear that we "lost" him to URI.

I know Coach P has struggled at UConn....but doesn't it make more sense to trash him for things that are real?

Too much common sense there Shaky, it doesn't fit the agenda, sorry have to go with "lost" or face the wrath of all who look for any morsel of garbage to throw on the staff/administration.

I agree with you a lot but after the most recent commits it seems we are starting to compete with BCS schools and have one of, if not our best class. Now let's get some offensive lineman. They built this program and all the skill is wasted without blockers.

You need to wait till after National Letter of Intent Day(Feb 6th this year) before making a statement like that. You don't know who UConn has coming in.

This is the 2nd local kid we supposedly "lost" who we didn't even recruit, and who signed with a program we consider at a lower level...in this case clearly lower. This is the very same attitude we attribute to the Connecticut high school coaches. just because a guy is the best player on a local team, that does not suggest that he's a high D1 talent. Good luck to the kid. I hope he is very successful at Rhody. I'm not knocking him at all, but fellas, if a kid is being recruited by Rhode Island, Bryant, and so forth, most likely that is where everyone sees his talent level. Sheesh.

Maybe two seconds of thought. Every single BCS program passed on the kid. Now they all might be wrong. If they are it's tough to single out UConn as even the entire MAC passed.

Really to end up at Rhode Island even the good FCS teams passed.

I think many missed the sarcasm.

URI was 0-11 as a FCS team. Good for the kid to lock up a scholly to a FCS school, but he is not a D1 quality player if he is going to URI. And to reiterate, if UConn still wants him they could get him even with a URI committment. He would simply reneg on that and committ to UConn.

Let's be clear, UConn didn't "lose" Matos to URI. There may have been interest, but he wasn't offered and likely wasn't high on the staff's wish list. They do have, what they believe is, a good group of WRs committed. It's not a knock on either party. My personal opinion, Matos was one of the best all-around players I saw in 2012. He's big, physical, and has runs very well (4.49). Matos IS a D1 talent, but he has only been a WR for two seasons. His ceiling, in my opinion, is high. He was impressive on the summer camp circuit, which was a huge boost to his confidence. It was also a great learning experience. But, he is still very raw at the position. I think that is why he was recruited primarily by FCS and D2 schools. He's still an unknown and didn't have an opportunity to showcase himself until this season, when Ansonia's offense became more balanced with JaiQuan McKnight under center. Again, it's not a knock on either party. Matos could have opted for Milford Academy but took a full schollie to be a Ram. He's a good get for them. He will have a chance to play early at URI. If he continues to develop, he can be an impact player for them.

For the record, there are many people on here who wanted David Coggins (BC-decommit). I have seen both numerous times. I'd take Matos, hands down.

Andrew Matos -- 6'1, 200, 4.49
David Coggins -- 5'11, 179, 4.75

Could it be a grades thing
I don't think it was a grades thing. But, maybe he didn't have high enough ACT/SATs to pass through UConn admissions. It happens, that's why I never went to Storrs. I had the grades (graduated in the top 20% of my HS class), but didn't do well on the SATs and couldn't get in. Went to UC-Avery Point, then transferred to SCSU, graduated in the top 5% of my class. There's too much stock in standardized tests, in my opinion.

Maybe.... And I know this is out there.... The people who do this for a living don't think he's good enough at football.

Are those the same people that told us Boeing Brown was a top QB prospect? The people that do this for a living, get it wrong more often then they get it right. And unless your paying for their services, they aren't going to pay much attention. Like I said, Matos doesn't have the body of work to truly judge him against his peers. If you watch him on film, he's pretty impressive.
