First Candle recruit?

Pulling from portal. I’m assuming the next guys to portal will have been asked to. Twelve of the 14 portalers I think can help us, most already have.

There's a lot of guys I want back from the portal, but if I had to rank my top 5:

-Big Ben (starting LT is massively important and he's damn good)
-Carsten Casady (only a sophomore, doesn't allow sacks)
-Chadwick (sophomore, probably our best DB)
-John Neider (local kid, fan favorite, made some really good catches last year)
-Osiris Gilbert (played really well when given time as a freshman)

With honorable mentions to:

-Mel Brown (really explosive but RB is easier to replace in portal and I expect Cam back)
-Diomande (he may have made his share of mistakes this year but he definitely made plays as well)
-Dominic Toy (has great potential and we are losing some TEs to graduation)

Happy we have a coach in place and can focus on roster construction! This part of the off-season is fun
 
I would imagine he is currently talking to key Husky and Rocket players right now. How beautiful would it be if can get those key players on board, essentially some level of merging 2 teams best returning players, and then fill in the gaps with other Portal options. This could be really good for us.
 
Obviously it doesn't really matter who Coach's "first" recruit is. I'm sure there are a few Toledo guys that are open to making a move here. The quickest option would be a Portal guy who really doesn't want to leave but was advised to explore his options. That could happen as soon as they meet Coach Candle and he introduces himself.

The next question is priorities and today every season is approached as at least a partial rebuild. For me the best bang for your buck is a solid O-line. Second are "disruptors" on d-line and linebacker. A couple of solid pass rushers cut down on the options your opponent has every series. We're going to look at everything but I always want my QB protected and the ability to get 2-3 yards when needed.

Am I the only one who sees upside in Nick Evers? He's a true dual threat quarterback and has more zip on his throws than Joe. Don't get me wrong, I'm not looking for a revisionist quarterback debate. Joe's our guy and he's been amazing for us, but I do feel as if a healthy Evers has a lot of potential.

Obviously, that's not an coronation and I'd love to bring in the best quarterback talent as possible to compete, but I feel like Nick is the forgotten man a bit on this board.

The thing with Nick is he’s got to be able to see his receivers and throw it to them. He just couldn’t see the field and then when he did throw, he wasn’t very accurate. He has a lot to improve on.

With Joe, so much of what makes him good is his skill seeing the field and then throwing with accuracy. What made him great was the simple change in his game that he’d run when necessary this season. It changed everything.

Much easier to make the changes Joe needed to make than it is to fix what Evers needs to fix.

Agreed, saw him throw a couple of passes early on this year and was impressed with the accuracy and zip with which he delivered. Small sample size in stress free moments, but hey, Lets go!

Very interested in how far Farrar has progressed.

No clue what McDonald brings to the table

It will be interesting to see what Candle sees in him, too. Maybe using him in a different way with a different play book unlocks his potential. Sometimes, a change of philosophy is all you need to be great...

If Candle looks at him and it isn't obvious then, I would say no. The game has changed too much to value incremental upside potential. JF just showed everyone what a starting QB conversation looks like. Yup, he's the guy.

If there is any question, then best to look elsewhere.

I've wondered what we had in Evers all season. As others have noted, he did look good against CCSU. But it's also a team from the FCS ranks, so one does kind of have to attach that asterisk to his performance.

However there is a reason he was a legit 4* recruit coming out of high school, and Pryce Tracy did help Joe improve significantly from last season to this one. Perhaps working with him could provide a similar boost to his own development?

At this point I'm not even sure if we will retain Pryce so it may be a moot point and not even worth thinking about. But he's not someone I would expect to cost a ton in NIL (if anything) and I think he's worth keeping in the QB room, if possible.

Honestly, we’ve seen enough Nick reps to know he’s not bringing anything special to the table. Fagnano proves what we know but people seems to always think they can engineer around. A great QB can turn an average squad into a contender.

I'm hoping that a true redshirt year did him some good after the florida-oklahoma-wisconsin roller coaster he was on, especially learning how to throw on the run, which obviously needed a lot of work. You can't be a total stiff and put up the kind of numbers he did in Texas 6A HS big boy football.
