UConn's trip to Italy begins tonight

There will be plenty of sightseeing but also the chance to play four exhibition games meeting the Netherlands national team on Monday and Tuesday in Rome, a game on Friday against the Italian All-Stars in Vicenza and will meet Celje on Aug. 20 in Capodistria. Celje posted a 29-1 record in the Slovenia pro league in addition to posting a 13-5 record in the Women Adriatic Basketball Association. I haven't seen the team rosters yet to know if that is the same squad that will face the Huskies with the exception of the Netherlands Orange Angels squad which will play the two games against UConn and one against Duke."

"You try to set your European trips because you either have a lot of players coming back and you just need to incorporate a few players or you have a lot of new faces who haven't played," Auriemma said. "In this case it is a little bit of both. We have a great nucleus returning and we have six new players, it has all the ingredients you are looking for when you are putting together a trip."

"Nurse is expected to join the team after the FIBA AmeriCup which wraps up tomorrow. Canada meets Brazil in the first semifinal today at 5:35 p.m. in Argentina followed by the Argentina-Puerto Rico semifinal. The winners not only advance to Sunday's 8:35 p.m. gold-medal game but also secure berths in the 2018 FIBA World Cup. A third spot will go to the winner of tomorrow's bronze-medal game."

And more of same: Huskies set to take flight to Italy

"Auriemma hopes he has a better and closer team in 10 days than he has now.

"That comes on its own," Auriemma said. "Some groups, no matter what you do, they are never going to get the kind of chemistry that you need to have a really good team. Some groups, you don't have to do anything because they already have it. This group already has a pretty good feel for each other.

"What is going to be the big divider is the level of play between the returnees and the new players. It's a huge gap. What ends up happening is that you hope that little by little the gap narrows. But as far as people starting to figure each other out and everybody starting to get a feel, we might get a sense for who the young guys are, what their makeup is and what they're all about. It will help to find out those things in August that you normally wouldn't find out until November."

Weird... no Pheesa anywhere in either of the clips.

Don't see her in the Day 1 pictures. Link

Having given historical lectures to popular audiences in Italy previously and doing so again next April, I see pictures like this and think: what a fantastic opportunity to say educational but interesting things about Italy's history. I don't think they brought along a UConn prof (I didn't see one in the pictures, but I certainly don't know them all), but wouldn't it be great if the kids could have UConn faculty given them a real (though again, not scholarly) tour of Italy? And wouldn't it be great for UConn faculty to be taken along, not only getting a "free trip," but also becoming even greater boosters of WCBB? A missed opportunity for everyone here.

They obviously have a (presumably knowledgable) guide. Looks like they
have radio receivers hanging around their necks, so they can hear the guide.

Geno the Cosmetician -.-working on their "makeup".
Geno has his CORE 6 or 7, pretty much established--now the task is to see how Molly, Erwin improved or not and where Walker, AEH, Gordon, etc (forgot the name) will work with the established core. For the foreseeable early future, they just won't be near that which Geno wants.
The real benefit of this trip--is TEAM CHEMISTRY--..

Thanks Rocky---this is like raw meat to starving dog--growl!!!!

I guess it is a generational thing, but I look at them and all the pictures and think they must have sore faces from all the smiles!

If something serious was happening, the team could not be all smiles.

If she's injured, she'd likely be there unless she needs the kind of intensive rehab available only in Storrs. And then it's sort of our business, but only sort of, because health is a private matter off-season.
If she's home because of family issues, it's none of our business.
If she's in Storrs making up academic work, it's none of our business.

We're all very curious, but we await Geno's first press conference where someone will make it their business and Geno will let us know if it is, indeed, our business.
