The NCAA does a dance every year or so with one or more SEC football program, slapping them on the wrist for getting their hand caught in the cookie jar while completely ignoring anything that would require a true punishment (there has been at least one SEC school on probation for football every season since 1979 but you can count the true penalties on one hand) as they really don't want to piss off the SEC.
In the movie Syriana, one of the characters (in the effort his firm was undertaking to get the DOJ to approve a merger) stated "we don't actually need to perform due diligence. We merely need to give the impression that we have performed due diligence" and later, a DOJ rep stated "in order to approve the merger they will need a body" (someone reasonably important taking a fall). The NCAA is merely attempting to do something thaat they can hold up to the general public while saying "see, we are doing our jobs, ensuring that the academic interests of basketball players are a priority" while not actually doing anything. We happen to be the body that is required to give the appearance that they have done their due diligence. We are a perfect target as we are not a historical program at the level of an Indiana, Kentucky, etc. yet we are every bit as much in the public's eye as any school due to our very recent title and our success over the past 1 1/2 decades 9which is equal to anyone's) and we are not a member of a conference with the clout to worry the NCAA.
This entire farce is an attempt by the NCAA to tell the world a lie and we just happen to be the fall guy.
