As a diehard Pats fan, yeah, the product they have been putting out this season makes some of UConn’s “dark ages” games look not quite so terrible. It’s actually pathetic.
I agree. On a more global basis, if anyone asks why these bowls continue, look at these numbers. What else draws numbers like this?

Also, If you doubt that football “drives the bus” Ohio State-Tennessee drew 14.7 million for a first round game in the CFP. UConn-Purdue drew 14.8 for the National Championship in basketball.

The TV viewership is driven by a whole host of factors, of which interest in UConn is one of many. The attendance number, however, is a real accomplishment and has the power to grab folks’ attention. However, it has to be followed up with more interest, ticket sales and NIL donations going forward. It’s meaningful as a leading edge of fan interest. If it’s just an anomaly, it’s a fun fact.

”Both the attendance and viewership for the 2024 Fenway Bowl were extraordinary given the circumstances, making it a standout event of the bowl season.

The Weather: The game was played on a cold damp late-December day in Boston, a less-than-ideal setting for an outdoor football game.

Team Profiles: UConn and UNC are not powerhouse programs in college football. UConn has only recently re-established itself as a competitive team, and both UConn and UNC are better known for basketball.

Sellout Crowd: Despite these factors, the game drew 28,000 fans who packed Fenway Park. This is highly unusual for two programs without massive national followings, especially in challenging weather conditions. Prior Fenway Bowls had significantly lower attendance and viewership.

Viewership:
Above Expectations: The Fenway Bowl was expected to hover in the 1–1.2 million viewership range due to the matchup and competing bowl games on that day. With 2.11 million viewers, the game significantly exceeded predictions for a bowl featuring two mid-tier teams in a smaller venue. Exceeding 2 million makes it one of the most successful “lower-tier” bowl games.

Why It’s Extraordinary:
Fan Loyalty and Novelty: While both team’s fans turned out, the overwhelming support for UConn indicated an unexpected level of interest in their program. The novelty of a historic baseball stadium hosting a bowl game also likely impacted attendance and TV curiosity.”

Not to rain on everybody's parade, but it looks like Bowl viewership is way up in general. BC/Nebraska pulled in 4+ million viewers. Syracuse/WSU pulled in almost 3 million.

However, we did outdraw some interesting matchups like Cal/UNLV, Tulane/Florida, and Memphis/WVU.

The week 2 games (around New Years) did a lot better than the Week 1 games.

Overall very respectable, though, given the state of our program, our opponent, etc. Keep winning and I think those numbers definitely go up.

Given that glowing a report, I'll accept a reference to "both teams fans turned out" followed by "the overwhelming support for UConn indicated an unexpected level of interest in their program."
I wouldn't be too critical of that mild an editorial comment. It was all good news and a compliment to UConn. They could have been totally silent.
