Fairfield Little League World Series

I'm not judging it. I think it's interesting.

I would also say college basketball is closer to pro basketball than little league baseball is to college baseball is to minor league and pro baseball. You're watching 11 year olds play a sport, even if they're the best of the 11 year olds.
It's weird trying to justify watching any sport on a "level of play" basis. Like you said, watching the best kids play ball is still just watching kids play ball. Why not just admit it's based on having a rooting interest and be OK with it? My soccer team is ranked about 600th in the world but I hang on every game. The fact is sports are fun to watch at any level if you have a rooting interest. Even sports one doesn't follow or care about. Like, I only watch curling once every four years.

The games are often competitive and frequently dramatic.

That's all it takes.

Neither Nevada or SC could use their aces yesterday due to the rest rules. So CT would have to face the other team’s ace regardless of who won yesterday. Facing the SC pitcher would have been seemingly worse as he has been outstanding on the mound. I’m sure Nevada has a good one as well though.

As for the setup of the tourney, I don’t like that a team can be eliminated with only one loss. At least that was well known to the teams going in. LL apparently wants a winner take all game final. But what I really hate is that some teams get opening round byes. That is so unfair. Hawaii had a bye and CT faced them after facing Texas. Not only did Hawaii have a shorter path but it also meant that CT faced the ace of Texas AND the ace of HI. Ridiculous.

And HI who has been really strong in recent LLWS tourneys getting a bye? I have to think it was on the up and up but by having byes it puts some doubt into if it was truly random.

And lastly NY beat CT earlier but then CT beat NY in the winner to Williamsport game. That was NY’s only loss. With only four teams in the Metro bracket I don’t know why

I don’t doubt that your guess is correct, but from a competitive standpoint, it’s totally unfair. Here’s a great take from Shane Ryan, back in 2011 (and kudos to one of the “nicer” Dukies, Shane Battier):

Yes, it is against the spirit of a double elimination tournament but there is a reason behind this. The belief was that having to win back to back games (or winning game two after losing the first game) would deplete the pitching too much for the world championship game.

The preliminary rounds were given the same format to conform with how the world series is formatted.

Not off to a good start. Down 3 runs in the top of the first. 34 pitches thrown already.

next year they'll implement a BCS system, play no games, and just pick 2 teams to play for the championship

no access to watch here in turkey 12:29am but espn has shown 4-2 bottom 5 for 10 minutes

Connecticut's Fairfield National beats Aruba in third-place game at Little League World Series

-> Fairfield National, the Connecticut and Metro champions, used a pitching-by-committee effort and three RBIs combined from the Taxiltaridis twins to beat Santa Cruz, Aruba, 4-2, in the consolation game at Howard J. Lamade Stadium. With the victory, Fairfield National became the first Connecticut team since Bridgeport's North End Little League in 1957 to finish third in the world. <-

Great effort and they should be proud. They will remember it forever.

I don't really understand why it's "double elimination" until the US/Int'l title games. Nevada should have had to beat them twice to get to the ultimate final.

I get it, but if they played another game, wouldn't that put the winning team at a big disadvantage in the finals vs. Taipei with the number of pitches thrown rule they use?

Yes. That is why they changed it.

With that in mind, what’s the deal with the pitches thrown rule? I’m not a baseball guy so I’m admittedly ignorant, but who’s to say a kid who’s willing and able to keep throwing shouldn’t keep throwing?

There have been rules on this for quite a while as in the late 1970's (I'm old, i was already many years beyond little league at this point) there were a lot of complaints about kids ruining their arms before high school age because of pitching too much.

I personally believe they've gone a bit too far on the pitching limitations but in cases like this it is better to err on the side of caution.

Are you serious? They're trying to protect kids' bodies. You really think the decision should be left to a 12 year old? Are you a parent?

Here are the rules on pitch limits and rest periods. See 14 and under rules in the link. Pitch limit per game is 85 (although you can go over that to finish the batter if a pitcher gets to 85 during an at-bat).

Baseball pitchers league age 14 and under

I said I’m not a baseball guy… it just doesn’t strike me as particularly different from doing any number of other repetitive motions without limitation. That’s why I asked.

Lots of kids in high school and college are having Tommy John surgery now, much more than ever before, so I think it is different. I'm not a physiologist but I don't think the human body was made to endure thousands of pitches at high speeds.

In all honesty I'm not sure the LL pitch limits and rest periods completely protect pitchers from getting hurt, but it's much better than no limits and rest periods. If you've never played summer baseball or had a kid on a team you probably have no idea how competitive it is. I can't even imagine what would happen if these rules were not in place.
