Stewie being Stewie--and with the wisdom of age--Kid who proclaim --we'll win 4--
are kids--and learn -it just AIN"t easy.
Geno on the Capital Steps in Hartford after the 2000 win --loudly proclaimed to a large crowd--(and I cringed)--"we'll be back next year" (for another NC victory parade) it didn't happen--ask Muffet and Riley why! Note : Geno didn't do that again.

Of course he didn't expect to lose 2 first team all-americans to injury.

In any given year--as Geno should have known--there are no guarantee of team health--At that time ACL was much more of an issue than today--the sports and medical communities have learned a lot--
It was Geno just being Geno--he had a crowd cheering his every word and he responded--
Shea's Acl was a second or third--Sveta's injury was completely out of left field. He put no caveat to his wording--it was dogmatically presented--factual--we'll be back here next year (paraphrasing), did you hear those words while Stewie, Tuck , Jefferson, were ready to rumble?? And they won 4.

Long winded way of saying YOU ARE CORRECT--he didn't know.

Most of the injuries to women athletes are still ACL injuries. With their lineup, they were favored to win again.

Actually, he did, and was pretty dogmatic about it as well.

Geno has said several times that he thinks the 2001 team is the best WBB team of all time!
He had seven AA's on the roster and 2 senior captains, Svet & Shea to keep things on an even keel!
But the loss of those 2 AA's, Svet to a foot injury and Shea to another ACL, hurt the leadership more than the talent level.
And they had ND beat in St. Louis in the semi's by 15 points at 1/2 time before Geno went nuts in the locker room and threw the team out of whack! If Svet & Shea were healthy they would have stopped ND's run and DT wouldn't have had to take 15 shots making 1!
And by winning in 2001 they would have won 5 in a row, 2000,2001,2002, 2003, and 2004!

IIRC (from one of the CPTV shows where they bring back alumni), they were up by 18 and gave up a late 3 right before half-time. Geno went off on them for that, and they really didn't respond well at all. Bird has said they were kind of shook after half-time and couldn't/didn't get ahold of the second half. Geno said basically the time would have been better spent just covering what they wanted to do the 2nd half instead of lamenting about what went wrong at the end of the 1st half.

Geno said he was at fault and Bird said they should have been able to cope.

Thanks. I was at the game. I think we expanded the lead back to 18 early in the second half, but then got away from what we did well. Once we fell behind, Sue and Dee became chuckers, to no avail.
