Everyone needs to take a DEEEEEP breath, and hold it

There is no blame, only opportunities.

I am glad somebody else posted this because
I wanted to. I have followed Dayton very closely the last few years (my daughter graduated from there) - I watched just about every game last year.

I was the guy last Spring begging for Brea. Not that Mahaney was/is a bad player. I do believe he will be better than what we have seen but everyone on this board just looked at Brea’s stats and saw him just a good 3 pt shooter. He would have been awesome in the Hurley system. Dayton ran everything through Holmes last year. Kobe’s points were almost always under duress, contested, shot clock bail out 3’s. You don’t see that in the stats. He is a lights out shooter. I have not watched any KY games this year, so I can’t comment on him this year except for his stats which, as you posted look damn good…
He took Mahaney over Brea cause he’s only a shooter, a damn good one at that. . Hurley believed at the time Mahaney could play the Point in his system. At UK he does not start and is still only a shooter.

Nothing wrong with an off the bench knock down shooter.

Gwynn and Calcaterra come to mind.

Not at all but Hurley was looking for more than a straight up shooter, especially with having just gotten Liam.

Yeah Liam was considered by a lot of guys to be the best shooter in his class, and we had Karaban coming back. Mahaney was supposed to be able to bring some ball handling and ability to score off the dribble. Obviously he hasn’t been great so far, but I don’t think the thought process was totally off-base.

Stay the course people. They got shell shocked in Hawaii. Refs are better, they probably win tourney. Dayton game was a no chance to regroup lets this damn island.

I was with you until your third sentence. Straight Kool-Aid drinking over here. Did you watch any of the other Maui games?

Even if he does come in as a 2 guard, and score (not sure he would ever replicate the instant burst scoring of Joey Calcaterra though), wouldn't his issues on defense cancel out any scoring he might bring?

Joey did eventually improve on defense and that IMO was because he had quickness which I don't think Mahaney has.
So why did we recruit him ???? If he’s unplayable in UConn’s offensive and defensive schemes why did we recruit him and pass on soooo many other talented players. We had the pick of the litter, almost nobody would’ve turned down a UConn offer. ( back to back and 7 players drafted in 2 years, who else could offer what we could?).

I wouldn’t go that far….

But I will say one fact lost in all this it was just one tourney gone south… Tourney’s don’t give you a chance to adjust and retune - they just happen in a flash.

I’d be more concerned iif this was over a few weeks in Jan/Feb. A lot more concerned.

Yep, he's only a shooter and he's only shooting 68% from three and only averaging 15 ppg.

I think Hurley was looking for the next Cam. I think he may have given a little too much credit to the “system” and thinking we can plug and play. Not surprising given the b2b but we had 7 pros on those two teams which probably had a lot more to do with our success than our offensive sets or hard practices.
A scheme or system, only gets you so far.

The players have to put the ball in the basket, cover or switch onto their man, and have court vision to make the right pass at the right time, to a player on their own team.

Talent and BBIQ matter.

Nothing about the thought process was off base, it just hasn’t worked yet. Maybe it will, maybe it won’t, but it’s incomplete right now.

It was almost universally lauded and agreed upon, so it’s funny everyone talking about the “mistake” that was made after a bad start.

Agreed. We lost a lot of talent and those pieces fit well together. We also know a Coach that just won two successive Nattys hasn't forgotten how to run a team. The question in a year of transition and rebuild is can you adjust your vision, re-evaluate and encourage input from the rest of the staff. That's needed right now because a bunch of "yes-men" aren't going to help Dan Hurley move forward. Our inside game isn't going to be the same without Clingan regardless of what we do. But some adjustments up top obviously need to be considered to get the most out of the 4 or 5 guys that haven't contributed to the level I'm sure they expect from themselves. How we address that is what I'll be looking for.

As long as these kids haven’t had their confidence completely shattered they’ll be OK. This was a huge eye opener for them (Duh, I know). But there were a couple of other very good teams that got blown out during the season before any nets were cut down. Regroup and learn to play defense. They’re going to have to work around the refs this season and unfirtunately that’s on Hurley.

We gotta take the bad with the good. There will be plenty of good. It’s the thrill of the chase.

You take the good
You take the bad
You take them both and there you have
The facts of life
