While compiling the Efficiency Scores for all the UConn teams to see how they compare, I noticed that only 1 time in 36 years since their first final four in 1991 has UConn ever had more steals than turnovers for a full season-2025: 455 Steals to 424 Turnovers. This year's team, while only 12 games into the season is also on pace with 177 Steals to 145 Turnovers!
I just find that incredible. The only other team that comes close is the 2016 team with 447 steals and 452 assists (Stewie, Morgan, Moriah at 38-0). In comparing the last 10 years of Final Four teams, the next closest team after the 2016 team was also the 2016 Syracuse team UConn beat in the final with 477 Steals to 514 Turnovers. To recap, counting the 40 Final Four teams from 2015-2025 and all the UConn teams from 1991 to 2025 for a total of 75 teams and only ONE team had more steals than turnovers-ONE!
From an offensive perspective, a great player will have 2 to 1 ratio of Assists to Turnovers, but when a TEAM has a 2-1 ratio, it is phenomenal and yes, UConn has achieved that 2 times 2017& 2025 and has the 3rd highest with 1.9 in 2018, next after that is Oregon 2019 with 1.88.
What I like about the Steals to Turnover net is it shows a team's defensive skills and their offensive savvy-so a balanced statistic.
This year's team is also on pace for a 2-1 ratio of Assists to Turnovers. You go Geno, you go....keep attaining goals previously unattainable even by your lofty standards.
