Evan Miyakawa has a blog out about a new tool on his website. He picked a few teams to show for free and UConn was one of them. The tool only ranks roster strength, and does not consider coaching.

Furphy is going to be a better defender than Ball? How does that compute?
Have to think of it in a Bayesian context. We know Ball wasn't very good on defense last year, and we only have an idea that Furphy probably won't be great. Ball will likely improve as players do as they get older, but will he improve enough to be better than Furphy's theoretical average freshman outcome considering how poor Ball was last year?

The numbers are close enough that you should consider it like the model saying it's 50/50 as to who will be a better defender. That being said, I think we can be bullish on Ball's defense this year considering his tools and some improvement he showed during the course of the season.

Ball spent much of last season nearly the worst defender in all of high-major basketball. The computers don't trust him yet
I knew he wasn’t a good defender , but was he honestly one of the worse defenders in the league? Genuinely curious. I feel like he has all the tools to be good on both sides of the ball

During the first half of the season the computers had him as pretty awful. IIRC he was the 2nd worst of any high-major starter. He improved quite a bit though.

Physical tools are there, always have been. Game is 99% mental for Solo on both sides of the ball at this point.

feels like every opposing guard he lined up against gave him work

He also acknowledged in this interview from a couple weeks ago that he needs to improve his defense and he's going to work hard on that this offseason. He has the physical tools and the willingness so I think we're going to see much improved defense from him next season.
