Flipped it over to ESPNU for some commentary on UCONN firing and got what I pretty much expected. It's been mentioned a few times that UCONN is not a good job and it's tough to recruit here. One even said that Randy Edsall set the expectations here too high and that PP took a job at the wrong time given how UCONN has been devalued lower because of the AAC (ironic coming from the mouth of an ESPN employee).

Wow. When ESPN goes on an all-out smear campaign, they are ruthless like politicians. Even when the host said something along the lines of "this team just made it to the Fiesta Bowl a few years ago", it was rebutted with "and because of that, expectations are WAY too high". Nothing like painting UCONN as the worst job in the world, a notch below cleaning toilets at McDonald's graveyard shift.

Thank God coaches don't take advice from ESPN flunkies. It makes you wonder. The horde bashes us as know nothings and over emotional but yet dopes on ESPN make off the wall comments and they are all knowing.

Yup, this is why I ban myself from watching, listening or reading ESPiN content (until now, of course). They only follow and know about 10-20 programs and don't know a thing about any other team.

Was driving into the city today (thanks Metro-North) and listening to Colin. Twice he mentioned the firing in the context of "when people make this amount of money results matter - even UCONN (who doesn't even LIKE football) fired their coach mid-season"...

It's funny when un-educated sources like ESPN (who could care less about UConn Football) always reference the fact that we went to the Fiesta Bowl 3 years ago, then PP came in and its like we're in the depths of he#l now... The fact is we were an 8-8 team that season, and got lucky with win/loss record and the BCS conference alignment and a poor Big East at the time to make it in a BCS bowl. No question that PP has slowly taken us backwards as a program, but I hate when the media paint the picture that Randy really was a godsend here at UConn. Did he build the program? Yes. But it was far from finished when he left here... far. And we still have a ways to go, and the future is bright.

Agree, heard it on-line. No mention of beating the snot out of South Carolina, no mention of the OT win at ND, no mention of having one of the best running games and defenses in the Big East and nationally. While it is true that UConn has had QB issues since Dan O left, the team’s key stats in running, turnovers, and defense has spiraled downward since PP arrived and it was not like there was no talent, especially on , just look at last year’s NFL draft.

Nothing new here. The media always goes with the easy spin and like it or not, thats the easy summary from the national perspective. Fortunately there are so many media outlets out there that I dont think the spin any particular tv program puts on something matters anymore.

Sorry to say but what ESPN said is what the UCONN program is. Its a football program in a terrible conference with no chance at any big bowls, impossible to recruit here considering there is not a lot of talent in new england and kids will never pick playing in the AAC over the other big four conferences and in a state that could not care any less about the football program. It is nothing more than a stepping stone coaching job or a retread coaching job.

True that Uconn is in a terrible confrence but a good football program starts with a commitment to solid coaching. Think Boise state. Who in the hell wants to go there? They have great coaching, period. Edsell wasnt great here but he got a few NFL players here, maxed their talent.

its a program that will never be a marquee job but that doesnt mean with a good structure, that it cant be a place you can win. It can be.

You have to tell the NFL that all those UConn kids playing there don't have many stars. After all, that's what the NFL Scouts care about, right? How many stars you had in high school.

Danny Kanell is the clueless one on OTL in saying it doesn't make sense to fire a coach in mid year. No offense Danny but you are a clueless twit. This needed to be done now. Brett McMurphy states this had to happen for UCONN and USC. He is correct.
