To be honest....I am very surprised. I am trying to not be a homer, but I can't believe schools like Temple and Southern Miss are ahead of UConn. How much does Southern Miss pay their coach? I just looked it up...800k. Doesn't that have to be a big part of a desirable coaching gig? Seems like an odd list to me.

They all talk about recruiting area....I wouldn't worry too much about it..like @HuskyHawk said..it's from ESPN.

Without top-tier facilities, top-tier recruits won't even look at a college nowadays and if one disagrees, just look what Texas, Oregon, Alabama and even Syracuse (not saying they are top-tier; but, the finally agreed to renovate their facilities) and then look at the state of things at BC and Rutgers for example and how hard Temple is pushing to build an on-campus stadium and support facilities. Geography can be overcome, facilities and coaching cannot.

You can't talk about recruiting area without looking at the ratio of schools to talent. Mississippi may have a better football culture than New England, but (a) Mississippi has 3 million people, New England 15 million, and (b) Southern Miss is competing with two SEC schools in-state, Miss State and Ole Miss, while UConn competes with only one P5 school, BC. Who is going to get more talent, UConn or Southern Mississippi?

The first sentence of their paragraph is exactly why we aren't 20th.

How many of the schools ranked above UConn have made a BCS Bowl Game?

Well..UConn was in a power conference when that happened. Things have changed.

But...it does prove that it is possible to have a very good team at UConn...which is hard to say for a lot of those other schools. I guess if you are going to completely base it on recruiting..then fine. But...that isn't the ranking. The ranking is best G5 jobs....and there is a lot more to the equation than recruiting territory and UConn excels at all those other elements (flagship school, facilities, coaches salaries, fan support, etc.).

So, in theory, Cal Poly is a better coaching job than UConn

Pasadena is way better than Storrs. No doubt big time recruits with an eye on a career in nuclear physics are flocking to Cal Tech. No way can we compete with them.

I'm not an ESPN insider, but I am curious - what are the top 5 G5 jobs according to ESPN? I assume BSU is in the top 5.

Recruiting territory and fan support may not be the only factors in a G5 job but they are the most important ones. Good recruits enhance your shot at a top 25 ranking and lets face it New England is not a 5star factory. Tremendous fan support turns heads not only at network meetings but at conference meetings and when you average less than 30K per home game not many of those heads are turning in your direction. Diaco & staff have to change all that and I believe the hire of Balis and their concept of the RKG prototype will get them there. Fan support will climb as the wins pile up. 8-4 this year folks and a bowl win move UConn into the upper half of that top 20 G5 list.
