Oh my: According to all the polls, by poor rebuilding Gamecocks play ten games against ranked opponents. In the polls that rank us 6th, we play three opponents ranked above us.

Oh woe! (I can't wait to see it tipped off!)

Hey @SECbbfan24 ! LSU doesn't have to play anybody ranked above them, Quit y'ur po'-mouthin'. Y'all can't lose!

I have no doubt South Carolina's SOS would rank very high either way, but doesn't Massey just use last year's rankings after the season ends to determine this year's strength of schedule initially? It may not matter much, but I don't think this initial SOS has anything to do with how good teams are expected to be this year, and until we have actual results to crank into their formula it is based on last year's status.

For example if a team like Stanford was on someone's schedule it would be based on last year's team whereas this year they are expected to fall off quite a bit, so Stanford might be overrated initially as an opponent. In contrast a team that is expected to be better than last year like say UCLA may be underrated as an opponent until this year's results replace last year's in the calculations.

Yes, Massey is pretty much garbage until at least ten games have been played and still stinky until new years.

I would assume that Dawn is happy being a bit under the radar in the rankings.......I would have put South Carolina at four.......

I get it. I kinda feel Virginia Tech should feel the same way in terms of being behind Ohio State. But overall I liked the rankings. Mostly fair imo. If I was Cameron Brink I would take this as disrespect.

I can see her point when Ole Miss and Texas are further ahead of Maryland. That is somewhat surprising.

Waaaaaaaaay Shyanne. i'm confused too. We were in the Final Four last year. Now, three teams are ranked ahead of us that didn't make the final four. (AP) We weven beat one of those teams once and another one twice.

Rhetorical Stuff: Ole Miss made it to the Sweet 16.. So, were they the 9th best team in the tournament or the sixteenth? Maryland made it to the Elite 8. So, were they the 8th best team or the 5th?

If the teams were 8/9 then we have to look at who each team added or lost from last year. (we do anyway).

Last years' results must always be tempered by team change (as the pollsters have RIGHTFULLY done with Scar). Shyanne: it's always a guessing game.

Love Shy but I don't think she realizes how much Diamond Miller and Abby Myers meant to the Terps. Also, the Terps may start out 1-2 with losses on the road to South Carolina and UConn.

Agreed that the loss of key players have to be factored, but I still get her point. More about being empathetic than anything else.

Should Maryland be top 8? No, but in comparison to a team like Texas or Ole Miss, I think they're comparable. It's really a matter of splitting hairs.

Yeah I think Maryland will probably have a very good year, but that ranking seems about right for them. Brenda is an excellent coach, possibly among the most underrated in the NCAAW, but Miller and Myers are huge losses.

Yes, Massey is pretty much garbage until at least ten games have been played and still stinky until new years.

Massey usually does have a couple of outliers on their top 15 but they also identify teams in January that AP ignores until late February.

Massey seems to consistently over rank Oregon. Yes, my opinion may be biased somewhat by their end of season number 1 Massey ranking in 2020 but I’m really talking about their Top ten preseason rankings since that date. This year Massey has them as number 18. The past 3 years performances certainly don’t justify that ranking this year.

Don't think it's biased at all. They're not considered pre-season top 25 for a reason. There a lot of question marks at the start of the season that need to be answered.

I know there is no "personal bias" I just wonder if there is a bias in the algorithm that consistently works in their favor.

Pre-season rankings in all sports are highly inaccurate. Rankings shouldn't begin until the conference games begin.

Massey is 100% analytic. There isn't any discretion. Over-ranking and under-ranking is a term that applies to polls like the AP. Instead of looking at the hard 1-2-3-4-5 Nos. I look at the tiny numerical ratings. The gaps between teams is often miniscule and often there are 3 or 4 teams that are virtually identical.
Offense
Or 110.59
SCar 105.50
Defense
Or 33.15
SCar 35. 21
Oregon's overall rating was 9.56 and SCar was 9.52. That's a virtual tie.

I thought Oregon had a lot more experience together while SCar was relying on freshmen like Boston. That's a huge factor in the NCAA's.

South Carolina was lead that year by 2 excellent seniors. Oregon had 3. SCar had more underclass talent and was deeper. But. As you point out, the difference were razor thin. They were 1/2 but it’s possible that neither would have made th Final Four.

But really, I went to that year to reveal my possible bias in looking at how Oregon has been “ overrated” by Massey every year since. You imply that in a computer can’t overrank because it is purely a numerical analysis. However, the analysis can be skewed by the weight placed on different numbers. NET, Massey and RPI never match. (In 2020 we had the strongest SOS in RPI and NET. Massey had Oregon with the strongest SOS. Algorithmic opinion caused by different weight placed on numerical factors!)

Oregon has failed to come anywhere close to the Massey early season rankings every year since their great year and have been ranked higher than other services at the end of the year- whether human poll or algorithm.

And yes, I will admit that “coincidences” occur - even with algorithms.
