End of Year Awards

Wade Trophy winner to be announced today. The self-proclaimed "most prestigious national player of the year award in college women’s basketball." The Wade is interesting because it has a long tradition of picking unique winners. Since 1983, there have been 4 or more major POY awards recognized by the NCAA (and 6 since 1995, except 2001-03 when there were 5), and 11 of the Wade's 41 winners since 1983 won no other major POY award. None of the other major POY awards have more than 3 unique selections.

The most recent unique Wade selections were choosing Odyssey Sims as the 2014 POY over Breanna Stewart, and Candice Wiggins over Candace Parker in 2008.

The Wade's most recent minority selection was choosing NaLyssa Smith over Paige in 2021, as did the Honda, with Paige winning the other 4 POY awards.
This wasn't a choice. Paige was ineligible for the Wade Trophy that season because freshmen were ineligible for that award until recently. That rule was amended in 2022.

Not recent but Holdsclaw never won the award. Ticha Penichero in 1998 and Stephanie White in 1999 were the winners.

Neither were what I'd call undeserving at all but Holdsclaw was the best player in the country those years yet didn't win.

Clark not being unanimous POY (35 of 36 votes, the other went to Brink) is disappointing given her season, accomplishments, and Iowa’s team success.
I doubt she'll sweat it. She's going to sweep every award and this year might go down as the best individual season ever by a women's college basketball player.

That's the result of relatively large numbers. Opinions vary, knowledge varies, and some people are just odd. It's hard to get to unanimity on something like this. I believe that Mariano Rivera was the only person elected unanimously to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Who were the 4 people who voted against Ty Cobb and the 11 who voted against Babe Ruth?
