“In April 2021, the NCAA announced that Emmert had received a contract extension through 2025, about a month after DeGioia gave him a vote of confidence in the wake of heavy public criticism toward the NCAA about inequities during the men's and women's Division I basketball tournaments.”

So now he will take over a year to vacate his office. What amazing efficiency!

I am more concerned with the chaos created by the new transfer and NIH rules. Two good ideas implemented poorly.

Whatever you think about Mark Emmert, it was a good time for him to go. During his time heading up the NCAA he’s lost control of college football to the P5 and he ultimately abdicated any responsibility to manage NIL, leaving the conferences and states to create a hodgepodge of different rules to manage an unwieldy process.

Whoever Emmert’s successor will be, they will undoubtedly have less power than he had, and hopefully get paid less. Maybe that’s a good thing.

How this guy kept getting jobs is beyond me. Nobody should be surprised as he's been a sleazy, do-nothing, empty suit forever.

Oof. Some razor sharp criticisms in this article:

theathletic.com

It's time to rethink the role of NCAA president, who is qualified to lead it

Mark Emmert and other former university presidents have failed. It's time to think outside the box for his replacement.
theathletic.com

"It is easy to retread over the inefficient, borderline feckless, tenure of Mark Emmert."

"So let’s just agree to agree that Emmert was not good at being the NCAA president, that he turned a puppet position into a vainglorious attempt to blow smoke up his own posterior rather than consider the greater good; that he never understood that his job was to represent the masses and not himself; and that given the rare opportunity to serve as the talking head he usually bungled that, too."

"So let’s not waste too much time here burying Emmert alongside his puffery."

Thank the heavens this guy doesn't get to help in the negotiations of the next NCAA Women's Basketball March Madness television contract. He'd mess it up like the NCAA did when included them in an automatic extension to the combined championship instead of removing it and have everyone bid on it separately.
