I remember when one player took a good team to the top and put Boeheim in the HOF (Yes, his wins would have got him in but the Natty made him a lock.). If Dybantsa increases his offensive arsenal, develops better chemistry with his teammates, and becomes more of a defensive stopper he could force BYU to a national championship.

He reminded me more of Purdue Glenn Robinson, although he was a better shooter.

I see it, Carmelo never beat UConn either.

The name most people throw out is Tracy McGrady. He's not nearly as strong as Carmelo was. I think there are several freshmen this year who can lead a team on a run, but experience wins out.

I don't see CA as a whole package, but the kid can play

Dybantsa is a special player and he was able to create his own shot against a tough defense. But, the BYU offense seemed to be focused on individual's creating their own shots instead of the offense creating shots. Could be it was early season or UConn's defense was that good, but I don't think you can win a title with individual shot creation.

Yea you can clearly see the NBA influence from BYU’s staff, even down to the extra steps, the flailing the head back when a defender reaches, all that stuff

I can’t remember but were we ever close to getting him???

Not to rehash this again since there are long threads on him with quotes from him, his father and other coaches that were recruiting Dybantsa, but the short explanation is UConn offered him after his sophomore year, his father asked for a huge NIL number, and UConn didn't speak to him or AJ again. I'm not going to search for all this but it's all on here somewhere.

Rob Dauster had a yearlong love affair romanticizing A.J. being the next great Uconn wing when it was outwardly recruiting Cooper Flagg. Cooper reclassed, chose Duke, and A.J. moved to Utah to play for a cardboard prep school.

Robinson was a lot stronger and, I think, a little shorter.

Lots of comparisons to McGrady, but as a college player I think he could be what we thought Rudy Gay would be. Both great athletes with the potential to be dominant 3-level scorers. Gay tended to disappear at times -- Dybansta will need to avoid that.

He would have been a really poor fit for what Hurley runs anyway. This isn't a Cooper Flagg, who is unselfish and does everything well. This is an iso ball scorer, while mega talented, is too ball heavy to really fit. He went to exactly the right school for him with Young as a coach.

I don't see Melo - he was a very balanced, more of a slick fade away, jump shooting player. McGrady sounds right.

Melo flourished in the BE (the real one), not sure Dybantsa could duplicate that success on any team. Melo was a special talent I will admit, and the best freshman baller I've ever seen. His championship run sets the freshman bar (his one claim to fame).

Dybansta is a March watch, that's for sure, he's just getting to know D1.

For whatever reason(s), the spacing in college basketball isn't great. With NBA spacing and pace, he is going to be an offensive machine.

He's one of many freshmen that will be worth watching. This year's tournament will be flooded with freshmen who will be better then than they are now. Many of this year's freshmen are going to be on competetive teams.

I get the Melo comparison. I was trying to think of someone who won a natty all on their own so I came up with Melo too. But speaking of 'Melo' I agree that his game is more like @boog204's G Robinson. Good call. Thats spot on

Maybe more of a KD-lite? KD is a mentor for him anyways. KD averaged an insane 25 ppg and 11 rpg in his year at Texas with a 2nd round exit. I could see Dybansta averaging ~22 and 8 by comparison with an elite 8 showing.
