Dom Amore: UConn pitcher Jimmy Wang found his way from Beijing to Storrs, where he’s balancing baseball and academics as he waits out a pandemic...

>This season, he (Wang) dealt with arm and back soreness, and flu symptoms that proved to be a common cold, but he eventually got into three games as a reliever, 4 1/3 innings with six strikeouts, and was just beginning to get fully healthy when spring sports were shut down due to the coronavirus. As a redshirt sophomore, he is eligible for the MLB draft.

“The scouts wanted to see him,” Penders says. “This year was going to be his coming out party.”<

>Could Jimmy Wang become the first from the mainland to play in the Major Leagues? He hopes to become a permanent U.S. resident, and he has a way of taking baseball people by surprise.

“His brightest days are ahead of him,” Penders says. “He’s got a chance to be really, really special if just a few things click. He just needs to pitch more. He hasn’t pitched enough yet.”<
