I don't think I saw them play last season. Are there any Michigan/Big Ten fans that can lend some insight? I'm flying out to Las Vegas, on Saturday, for Monday's game with SC.

I think the Youtube videos from last season will shed too much light on what to expect of this year's Michigan.

Michigan lost a huge part of their roster from last year, including Laila Phelia (Texas), Cameron Williams (Miami), Chyra Evans (Utah). Guard Jordan Hobbs is the only returning player from their top six rotation last year. Michigan doesn't look like they will pose much of a challenge in the post for South Carolina, so I'd expect your posts to be able to dominate even though they are relatively inexperienced compared to years past.

Michigan will likely be in a re-building year in which they look to talented newcomers Syla Swords and Olivia Olson to develop into key contributors who enable Michigan to compete. Given the relative lack of post experience, I think you can expect Michigan to play a four guard lineup at times - and there were reports of Michigan pressing early and often in their exhibition game --- so not quite sure what to expect as they take the court against the mighty Gamecocks in Vegas.

I fully expect South Carolina to crush this Michigan team, and I daresay, it won't be pretty.

This is what I came up with for their exhibition game:

“Some good, some bad, some ugly.” That is how the announcer has summed it up a couple of times and I agree.

43-30 Michigan leads at the half. Even against Northwood, their front court is ineffective. They will be channeling 2023-2024 UConn a bit and playing some 4-5 guard lineups.

Holloway stood out because of her athleticism.

Olsen is big. And she can create her own shot. I see why UConn wanted her.

Swords quiet. Shot blocked a couple of times. Foul trouble. Overdribbled and turned the ball over a few times. Effective as a shot creator though. Probably has a few assists.

With Holloway in foul trouble, I saw a lot of point guard by committee from Michigan.

Olsen is up to 22 points. Easily player of the game.

Michigan is pressing still in the 4th quarter. I am not sure why. I view this game as preparation. And I can’t imagine they will press South Carolina.

81-52 Michigan.
They are guard centric. They killed northwood on the boards. But South Carolina should be able to kill them in that category. They have some athleticism. But it would be at the bottom end of the sec.

They are young. And this is their first game.

Olson versus Kitts seems like it would be an interesting matchup.

They pressed northwood because they wanted to force an up tempo pace. Hard to imagine they would try that against South Carolina.

They had point guard issues when their primary point guard was in foul trouble.

South Carolina should have no trouble. -30 South Carolina.

With most of the veteran experience gone, save for a couple players, it's anyone's guess as to what one can expect this year.

TBH, I hope Michigan does press us. That would be disastrous for them.

I think Coach KBA would be getting emails, text messages, and phone calls questioning her game plan skills if she presses South Carolina like she did Northwood. I doubt she would press but you ever know.

Michigan pressing Northwood so much baffled me.

I was just thinking, “don’t you have some half court stuff you want to work on?”

Has Michigan really been a team that pressed a lot though? This hasn't been a trait of theirs from what I can recall. I could see that being a point of emphasis if the plan to is to generate offence from their defence?

With so many new players to the team, they're still developing an identity. They're not a post dependant team like the Hillmon era. The previous two seasons were heavily reliant on veterans which won't be the case this season. What they're up to is anyone's guess.

Syla Swords is the next Caitlin Clark. Michigan probably did some of their best recruiting in this class. Have to admit they gave SoCar a better game than I imagined they would considering they lost some key pieces from last year. Go Blue will lose some games but should finish in the top half of the Big Ten.

How about we just let Syla do her thing before anointing her? Trust me, this Canadian loves that she's done well to date but putting her in such a category after 1 NCAA game is a bit much.

I'm also saying this as Canadian Basketball fans are desperate for more stars to help build a strong national program. Canada Basketball has hyped players like Nurse, Amihere, Edwards, Fournier, Prosper and Swords as the next big thing. Results are mixed so far.

Nurse and Amihere won national titles, but their success at the WNBA hasn't translated as some hoped they would to this point. Edwards had a great college career and a good start as a rookie. Fournier was projected to be a given on the Senior team a couple years ago but that hasn't panned out yet.

Prosper's NCAA career has yet to really happen mainly due to injuries and Swords is just starting. And for irony, Carleton didn't get much hype compared to Nurse and was considered to be more of a role player. She ends up being a better player overall during the Olympics and had a hell of a WNBA season.

There's no way to tell at this moment. Let's just see what happens.

I can tell you their coach has one of the greatest basketball minds in the industry. She took her little St. John's team into Storrs and broke a 99 game home winning streak against a team with all-Americans.

Next big test December 17 vs Oklahoma followed by back to back road trip to U$C and UCLA on the 29th and NYDay. (They do have a conference game against Northwestern the week before Oklahoma. )
