Listened to the Hurley -Tressel interview tonite (if you haven't, do it) and they talk about chatacter a lot, of course.

I also had WFAN on all day and heard more than a few callers absolutely slamming Aaron Judge.

Despite being a very high character guy, and a humble dude, he is also a real person.

I'm not gonna spin this anyway.

Do athletes really sign up to be trashed the way many people do?

Is it a matter of knowing what you are getting into and you just have to eat it?

Will the product change, if we are less nutty as fans?

I once heard a chef complain about the number of burns on his hand and it made me wonder...

In a perfect world, we'd all take a step back when our teams are losing.

In this world, we get emotional. You've got to be mentally tough enough to not let the noise get to you. Don't become a public figure if criticism ruins you.

Just look at our society. As The Buffalo Springfield sang. “Nobody’s right if everybody is wrong”.

One thing that stuck with me was what happened when Trea Turner was struggling with the Phillies. He signed a huge contract for a decade in a city famous for booing everyone. You could tell he was probably wrestling with some fears of maybe becoming a famously bad example of a contract. At the same time, it’s hard to truly feel bad for a guy with a 300 million dollar guaranteed contract. It probably didn’t make him feel any less anxious at the time, contract or not. At least until the fans gave him a standing ovation. Judge has enough fans that realize we wouldn’t be there without him. It probably won’t matter to him until spring training though.

The “errors” by Judge and Volpe were physical. It happens. The brain fart(s) by Cole and Rizzo and in another territory. Not sure where to place the catchers interference by Wells.

Fan is short fanatic. That is all you need to know.
And at the professional level, eating a turd sammichbwhen you screw up is expected.
I draw the line between calling a player out for what they do on the field and calling them out as a human being without anything to back it up.
I also think idolizing players you see a few hours a week is a set up for disappointment.

I love Aaron Judge, great guy and an incredible regular season player but he's paid $360 million to also do it in the playoffs. He finally started to hit after breaking all sorts of records for playoff futility and then he turned into Steve Bartman trying to catch a pop up. Of course he's going to get trashed and deservedly so. He knows that.

Giancarlo deserved better from all his teammates.

He’s a grown man making hundreds of millions of dollars for playing a kids game. As long the family doesn’t get dragged in or harassed, ridiculing him is fair game and expected

I don’t take losses personally. Never did. Never got fans who did. I was at a UConn game at the Civic Center and Mike McKay made a bonehead play. Guy next to me screamed you piece of garbage. I said hey buddy shut up. He’s like I paid for this seat. I said I paid for the seat next to you, these are kids out there.

It amazes me how nasty people can be toward players at the college level AND in the pros. Saying stuff they would never say to their neighbors or co-workers. It says more about the loudmouth than it does about the target player.

And more importantly they never say it face to face one on one.
