Something like this gets written every summer. It's an ESPN Insiders article. Honestly, it's a pretty bland article. Nothing much of substance.

Do Texas, Maryland, UConn own recruiting advantage with USA Basketball?

Hamidou Diallo: One of the best pure scorers and athletes in the 2017 class, Diallo has emerged as one of the most sought-after rising seniors. But two programs have seemed to separate themselves from the pack heading into the final months of the process: Kentucky and Connecticut. John Calipari consistently watched Diallo over the past couple of months, while Ollie has been a presence at many of the Putnam Science Academy (Connecticut) product’s games. Diallo (No. 12) will likely take his time making a decision, and there are other schools involved, but Ollie could get an extra boost in beating out Calipari and the Wildcats.

I don't think there is any question. Between this and the new facility, it's hard not to see great classes in the future.

Imagine KO's recruiting ability if he could pitch kids games against Kansas, Texas, Iowa St, Oklahoma, Baylor, West Virginia, etc twice a year.
I'd imagine it would probably look similar to what it looks like now.

This one highlights a potential recruiting advantage. Unless Coleman decides to opt for Duke or Kansas in which case maybe it wasn't.

Before these two claimed offers, Coleman, who transferred to Oak Hill last year, was considered a heavy Texas favorite. Coach Shaka Smart, who was the USA Basketball U-18 head coach, opted to start Coleman, who will turn 19 in January, over likely McDonald's All-Americans Trae Young and Quade at the FIBA Americas U-18 Championship. Some believe that this was done to curry favor with Smart's top remaining point guard recruit in 2017. Coleman averaged 7.8 points per game and finished second in assists, while being a part of a gold-medal winning USA Basketball U-18 team in South America.

Shaka and KO are both players coaches which can unquestionably appeal to recruits. They're plus recruiters.

Does Carmelo being the best international player of all time help Syracuse? Who cares. Leave it alone. No matter who the coaches are, the question will arise.

At the end of the day recruiting rank doesn't will out, the coaching does. Hence why Calipari only has one title. Bamba is a stud. NBA quality talent. But he's raw. There's a 4/5 ranked below him that will mean more to their team than him. Who cares? One team is going to be the best recruited, the game is played on the court.

If it's not KO ,Shaka or whoever, it going to be someone that has to coach these kids. Recruiting advantage is when you hire a kid's parent or high school coach on to your college team. That's crossing the line.

An advantage doesn't have to be unearned. Just like it's an advantage whenever coach K appears in a commercial, it's an advantage that KO gets to coach some of these kids while they're still at their most impressionable point.
